THE CONTACT OWNS FOUR COOPER ZEON SPT TIRES, SIZE 205 55 R16. THE CONTACT WAS ROTATING THE TIRES, WHEN HE NOTICED THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TIRE WAS BALD. THE TIRES WERE INSPECTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE TIRES WERE DOWN TO THE WEAR BAR. THE TIRES WERE NOT REPLACED. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT VEHICLE MILEAGE WAS 100,00 AND THE APPROXIMATE TIRE MILEAGE WAS 8,000.
THE TIRE DEALER RECOMMENDED MICHELIN PRIMACY MXV4 AS A REPLACEMENT TIRE FOR MY 1997 VOLVO 850 (NORMALLY ASPIRATED) SEDAN. THE MICHELIN WEBSITE DESCRIBED THIS TIRE AS AN "ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTE" FOR THE TIRES SPECIFIED BY VOLVO BECAUSE MICHELIN NO LONGER OFFERS HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES IN MY SIZE. STOPPING POWER IS MUCH WORSE WITH THESE NEW MICHELIN TIRES. THEY SQUEAL EASILY, EVEN AT VOLVO'S HIGHEST RECOMMENDED AIR PRESSURE (36PSI). I HAD DIFFICULTY STOPPING FROM 50MPH IN AN EMERGENCY, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY 17 YEAR OWNERSHIP OF THIS VEHICLE. I BLAME THESE NEW "COMFORT ORIENTED" TIRES.
THE PROBLEM I HAVE EXPERIENCED IS A CONDITION WHERE THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRES FORMS A BULGE, CAUSING THE TIRE TO BECOME UNBALANCED AND IN DANGER OF BURSTING. FROM SPEAKING WITH SEVERAL TIRE DEALERS, IT SEEMS THAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IS THE ULTRA-LOW PROFILE DESIGN OF THE TIRES WHICH MAKES THEM UNUSUALLY VULNERABLE TO DAMAGE FROM NORMAL ROAD HAZARDS. I HAVE HAD FOUR TIRES DEVELOP THIS CONDITION ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. SINCE I AM EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS ABOUT AVOIDING ROAD HAZARDS, AND PUT SNOW TIRES ON THE CAR IN THE WINTER, IT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT A COINCIDENCE. FURTERMORE, IT IS QUITE EVIDENT THAT MANY OTHER VOLVE 850 OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME BAD FORTUNE. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 205-45/Z17 )
TIRES: MICHELIN 205/50/16 ZR RATED MXM. RIGHT FRONT TIRE BLOW OUT DURING FIRST YEAR. ALLOY CONSTRUCTION OF RIMS ARE PRONE TO DAMAGE. OTHER THREE TIRES BLEW OUT SHORTLY AFTER. JACK APPARATUS IS POORLY DESIGNED--CAR FELL OFF JACK SEVERAL TIMES.
