How we ranked these tires for the volvo 850
We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 195/60R15; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:
- Best all-season ranks on a weighted score: tire type matches passenger car segment, season is "all-season", premium brand bonus (Michelin / Continental / Bridgestone / Pirelli / Goodyear / Nokian).
- Best budget ranks on cost-per-warranty-mile; the lower the better. Premium brands get no bonus here.
- Best quiet ranks on the EU tire-label dB rating; lower is quieter.
- Best winter filters to tires marked 3PMSF severe-snow rated or all-weather class, with a small premium-brand bonus because winter-compound R&D is capital-intensive.
For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

THE PROBLEM I HAVE EXPERIENCED IS A CONDITION WHERE THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRES FORMS A BULGE, CAUSING THE TIRE TO BECOME UNBALANCED AND IN DANGER OF BURSTING. FROM SPEAKING WITH SEVERAL TIRE DEALERS, IT SEEMS THAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IS THE ULTRA-LOW PROFILE DESIGN OF THE TIRES WHICH MAKES THEM UNUSUALLY VULNERABLE TO DAMAGE FROM NORMAL ROAD HAZARDS. I HAVE HAD FOUR TIRES DEVELOP THIS CONDITION ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. SINCE I AM EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS ABOUT AVOIDING ROAD HAZARDS, AND PUT SNOW TIRES ON THE CAR IN THE WINTER, IT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT A COINCIDENCE. FURTERMORE, IT IS QUITE EVIDENT THAT MANY OTHER VOLVE 850 OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME BAD FORTUNE.
TIRES: MICHELIN 205/50/16 ZR RATED MXM. RIGHT FRONT TIRE BLOW OUT DURING FIRST YEAR. ALLOY CONSTRUCTION OF RIMS ARE PRONE TO DAMAGE. OTHER THREE TIRES BLEW OUT SHORTLY AFTER. JACK APPARATUS IS POORLY DESIGNED--CAR FELL OFF JACK SEVERAL TIMES.
THE LOW PROFILE TIRE / ALLOY WHEEL COMBINATION ON THE FRONT OF THE CAR IS VERY SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE FROM ROAD HAZARDS (POT HOLES). TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE FRONT TIRE WAS DAMAGED (DID NOT LOSE PRESSURE, BUT DEVELOPED LARGE BULGE IN SIDEWALL) AND THE ALLOY WHEEL WAS DAMAGED (BENDING AND CRACKING OF WHEEL RIM).
WHILE DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEED, I NOTED AN INCREASE IN VEHICLE INTERIOR NOISE. AUTO HANDLED NORMALLY AT THAT TIME. WITHIN PROBABLY LESS THAN A MINUTE IT WAS CLEAR THAT NOISE CHANGE WAS NOT RELATED TO ROAD SURFACE VARIATION, AND I STARTED TO PULL OVER TO SIDE OF FREEWAY. WHILE DOING SO, TIRE BLEW OUT. CAR FISHTAILED ENDING UP AGAINST GUARDRAIL. TIRE BASICALLY DESTROYED. NO INDICATION OF DEBRIS IN ROAD AT TIME PROBLEM STARTED. I AM VEHICLE'S ORIGINAL OWNER. THIS TIRE HAD NEVER BEEN PUNCTURED OR REPAIRED AND HAD NEVER HAD A PERIOD OF UNDERINFLATION. TREAD INSPECTED BY DEALER AT ROUTINE SERVICE ABOUT 5 DAYS PRIOR AND WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE WAS CHECKED BY ME APPROXIMATELY 12 HRS PRIOR TO EVENT AND WAS PROPER. VERY SCARY!! *AK (TIRESIZE: 195/60R15)
