TireIndex
What tires actually cost across US retailers
A transparent, daily-refreshed index of tire prices across the major US online retailers. Inspired by Matt Cortland's Guinndex for Guinness pints in Ireland — same idea, different product. We track every snapshot, surface the median, and call out where retailers disagree most.
Week-over-week movers
Movers populate once we have at least 14 days of history. Check back next week.
Methodology
For every tire model in our catalog, we maintain a time-series of retailer-listed prices. The TireIndex snapshots each retailer once per day; each snapshot stores the retailer, the URL, the price in cents, and the captured date. The index pages collapse multi-size listings to the retailer's cheapest current listing for the model — that's the fair "where to buy" comparison.
We do not currently include local independent installers or regional dealerships — national retailers post prices online, but Mom-and-Pop shops generally don't. Closing that gap is the next phase of the TireIndex.
