Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 235/75R18; one rim size up, 0.24% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 215/75R19; two rim sizes up, -0.33% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2025 ram 3500
The 2025 Ram 3500 ships from the factory on 235/80R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. 3 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Ram 3500 comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2025 Ram 3500 owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2025 Ram 3500, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.
NHTSA-reported issues for 2025 ram 3500
Top issue category: Tires (General)
Reported across: 2025 – 2025 (1 year)
What owners described

|---|---|---|---|
| Blowout or sudden deflation | 35% | 20% | 1.7× |
| Sidewall failure | 14% | 15% | 1.0× |

THE TPMS (TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM) QUIT READING THE TIRE PRESSURE ON MY TRUCK WITHIN THE FIRST FEW HUNDRED MILES OF OWNERSHIP. MY TRUCK HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR A TOTAL OF 6 TIMES FOR 8-10 DAYS FOR THIS ISSUE. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIGURE WHY THE SYSTEM QUIT....THEY HAVE REPLACED THE SENSORS, THE RF HUB, ETC. I HAVE JUST OVER 7,000 MILES ON THIS TRUCK AND THEY FINALLY GOT IT TO WORK CORRECTLY ABOUT A MONTH AGO. THIS WEEK, IT HAS STOPPED FUNCTIONING AGAIN. IF THE NHTSA REQUIRES THESE SYSTEMS TO BE ON VEHICLES FOR SAFETY, THEN CHRYSLER/MOPAR/DODGE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 RAM 3500 EQUIPPED WITH NEXEN RODIAN HT XRX5 TIRES, SIZE: LT235/80/R17 (NA). WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE SHOOK. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT BOTH FRONT TIRES EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THE TIRES WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED TO THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE. THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE ENTRY LEVEL TIRES AND SHOULD NOT BE ON THE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE VEHICLE AND TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,500.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 RAM 3500 EQUIPPED WITH NEXEN ROADIAN-A/T TIRES, SIZE: 255/65R16. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE STEEL BELT SIDEWALL DETACHED AND THE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND REPLACED THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN UNKNOWN DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE. THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE STEEL BELT SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE DETACHED AND WAS REPLACED BY THE CONTACT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE APPROXIMATE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000. THE DOT NUMBER AND VIN WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 RAM 3500 EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE TRANSFORCE AT TIRES, SIZE: 285/60/R20 (NA). WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE EXPLODED INTO PIECES WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT BRIEFLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO PLACE THE SPARE TIRE ON THE VEHICLE AFTER THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED LARRY H. MILLER DODGE RAM TUCSON (4220 E 22ND ST, TUCSON, AZ 85711, 520-395-9311) AND WAS INFORMED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A FIRESTONE DEALER. WHEN THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO FIRESTONE, HE WAS INFORMED THAT SINCE HE DID NOT PURCHASE THE TIRES DIRECTLY FROM FIRESTONE, THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE APPROXIMATE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,500.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
