Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 225/70R16 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 205/70R17; one rim size up, -0.36% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/65R18; two rim sizes up, 0.32% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 1999 lexus RX
The 1999 Lexus RX ships from the factory on 225/70R16 tires mounted on R16 wheels. Only one approved fitment is documented for this model year, so replacement options should match the original size exactly unless a plus-size upgrade is being considered. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Lexus RX comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 1999 Lexus RX owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 1999 Lexus RX, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

4 new tyres were installed by Firestone but driver side wore out despite balancing rotation, alignment performed during install. TyrePlus sister concern replaced with new tyre and prorated as the tyre was at fault. Same tyre blew out on the road. The tread, side all etc damaged the wire harness and car went out of control causing damage to suspension and fuel tank. Fuel began to leak. Car is toatled due to several other damages. TyrePlus does not want to take ownership. However they have all records of up to date maintenance. They referred me to Bridgestone wherein I need to submit 2 estimates. Tyre purchase dates maintenence etc. I have secured the tread and parts of the tyre which blew out and they want me to submit that. I am hesitatnt to submit it as they may tamper with the proof I have to fix it.

235/65r18 tire. I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden it was a loud noise and immediate tire noise. I struggled to slow the vehicle down and pull to the side of the road The tire is absolutely destroyed both on the inside and the outside side walls of the tire. I could have had a horrible accident because the car was completely out of control when the tire blew
We bought the brand new Lexus (RX450H) back in 2022 (Vin [XXX] ). As of today, February 03, 2025, the mileage on the car is 20,125 miles. The OEM tire size was 235/55R20, all the 4 tires were Bridgestone Ecopia H/L [XXX]. Recently, one of the wheels exploded when it passed a pothole, the tire was damaged and the rim was bent/cracked as well. I brought one tire, same brand and size, and installed it to the new Lexus rim. The installer told me that these tires were "Recalled" and suggested to replace all 4 tires ASAP. I Google and found these recalled tires as well. As of now, couple other tires keep leaking air as well.S.C. 552(B)(6)
