The evidence base

40Written owner reports
3Reported crashes
3Reported injuries

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Blowout or sudden deflation appears in 33% of these reports; about 1.6× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 40 reports filed against the Uniroyal Laredo across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 FORD F-250 EQUIPPED WITH UNIROYAL LAREDO TIRES, SIZE: 265/75R16 (NA). WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE RUPTURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 185,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000. THE DOT NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE.

PASSERBY NOTICED DEFECT AND ALERTED MY WIFE. TIRE BULGES ON SIDEWALL NEAR TREAD. UNIROYAL NOTIFIED BUT SHOWS NO CONCERN ABOUT TIRE DEFECT ON 2002 CHEVY LAREDO W/ 1237 MILES WHEN TIRE REPLACED. TIRE IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. PLEASE NOTIFY ME ABOUT YOUR CONCLUSION OR IF YOU HAVE FURTHER QUESTION.

NHTSA complaint 344413

MY 2000 GMC JIMMY UNIROYAL LAREDO TIRE BLEW OUT WHILE TRAVELING AT 60 MPH, NO ONE WAS INJURED. BUT THE COMPANY REP AT DISCOUNT TIRE SAYS IT HAD TO BE LOW ON AIR. I DO NOT AGREE I HAD CHECKED ALL MY TIRES JUST THE WEEK BEFORE AND THEY ALL HAD THE SAME PRESSURE OF 32 PSI, THE TIRE SPLIT HORIZONTALLY IN FOUR PLACES IN THE FRONT AND 1 IN THE BACK.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Uniroyal Laredo tires?
Across 40 written complaints, the most common description is blowout or sudden deflation, in 33% of reports; about 1.6× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Uniroyal Laredo recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Uniroyal Laredo tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 36,180 miles, with 8 in 10 between 4,500 and 115,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Uniroyal Laredo failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 3 crashes and 3 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
