The evidence base

308Written owner reports
19Reported crashes
28Reported injuries
2Reported deaths

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Sidewall failure appears in 29% of these reports; about 1.9× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 308 reports filed against the Goodyear Eagle across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

TOOK OUR CAR IN FOR INSPECTION AND MECHANIC POINTED OUT THAT ALL 4 TIRES WERE DRY ROTTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITH THESE TIRES. CAR IS A 2012 INFINITY GX25 AND CAR HAS ONLY 18,000 MILES ON IT. BOTH CAR DEALER AND GOODYEAR STORE SAID THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. BECAUSE OF DANGER, WE ARE HAVING THE TIRES REPLACED.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET IMPALA EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR EAGLE 2 TIRES, SIZE 225/55/R17. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVERS FRONT AND THE PASSENGER REAR TIRES STEEL BELT SEPARATED CAUSING THE TIRE TO BLOW OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE AND TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,510. UPDATED 10/7/14*CN UPDATED 7/15/2015

NHTSA complaint 1100115

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN TO THE TIRE SHOP THIS MORNING TO HAVE THE TIRE PATCHED FOR A SMALL SCREW THAT WAS PICKED UP DURING NORMAL OPERATION. I RECEIVED A CALL A SHORT TIME LATER FROM TIRE SHOP TELLING ME THAT THE SIDEWALL OF MY TIRE HAD FAILED. THIS IS THE SECOND SIDEWALL FAILURE MY GOODYEAR EAGLE LS-2'S HAVE EXPERIENCED IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS. VEHICLE IS 2015 VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG, AND THE TIRES WERE ORIGINAL WITH THE VEHICLE. 50% FAILURE RATE IS UNACCEPTABLE. I HAD TO REPLACE THE FIRST ONE AND WILL BE FORCED TO REPLACE THE SECOND ONE AS WELL. THESE ARE AROUND $325 PER TIRE, SO OUT AROUND $650 IN LESS THAN A YEAR, BUT I FEEL INCREDIBLY LUCKY THAT NEITHER INCIDENT WAS AT SPEED, OR THE LOSS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH HEAVIER. I AM A FATHER TO TWO WONDERFUL CHILDREN, AND I DO NOT FEEL LIKE THESE TIRES ARE SAFE, AND AM BEYOND CONCERNED FOR THEIR WELL BEING.

TIRE HAD A SIDEWALL SEPERATION ON THE HIGHWAY RESULTING IN ACCIDENT; THIS HAS HAPPENED NOW TWICE, ON THE STOCK TIRES, FIRST TIME I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST BAD LUCK, HOWEVER TWO TIMES SEEMS TO BE FISHY. THE TIRES HAVE PLENTY OF TREAD LEFT. I AM INTERESTED TO FIND OUT IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER PEOPLE.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Goodyear Eagle tires?
Across 308 written complaints, the most common description is sidewall failure, in 29% of reports; about 1.9× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Goodyear Eagle recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Goodyear Eagle tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 20,000 miles, with 8 in 10 between 5,600 and 49,510 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Goodyear Eagle failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 19 crashes and 28 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
