The evidence base

32Written owner reports

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Bubble or bulge in the tire appears in 84% of these reports; about 14.3× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 32 reports filed against the Goodyear Eagle LS 2 ROF across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

GOODYEAR RUN ON FLAT 245/40/19 GETS BUBBLE ON TIRE. I HAD TO CHANGE THE SAME TIRE WITHIN 10 DAYS WITH NO WARRANTY COVERAGE AVAILABLE. THEN A WEEK LATER HAD TO CHANGE ANOTHER TIRE WHICH IS 3 TIRES WITHIN 5,000 MILES AND COST OF $1,600.

NHTSA complaint 1003834

TIRE IS A RUN FLAT TYPE OF TIRE AND THE WEAR OF ALL FOUR TIRES WAS SEVERE ON THE INSIDE OF TIRE WHILE TREAD ACROSS THE REST OF THE TIRE WAS STILL SATISFACTORY. REAR TIRE TREAD STARTED SEPARATING AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE TREAD SEPARATION. CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF THE TIRE AND LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE INTERNET RESEARCH INDICATES THIS TO BE A "COMMON" PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THE MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE THE DANGER TO THE PUBLIC.

NHTSA complaint 1413609

OVER A PERIOD OF 5 WEEKS AND 2300 MILES I HAVE EXPERIENCED SIDEWALL DEGRADATION (BLISTER) FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES ON THREE TIRES AFTER TRAVERSING BROKEN PAVEMENT/POT HOLES AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 25 AND 60 MPH. SINCE THIS SPECIFIC TIRE IS ONLY SOLD ON 2011 BMW 535 AND 550 ALL-WHEEL DRIVE MODELS WITH OPTIONAL SPORT PACKAGE EQUIPMENT, THERE ARE PROBABLY RELATIVELY FEW PEOPLE WHO OWN THE TIRE. THEREFORE, I REQUEST THAT YOU BE ESPECIALLY VIGILANT IN INVESTIGATING ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEM SINCE YOU WILL UNDOUBTEDLY RECEIVE FEW FAILURE REPORTS. BECAUSE I PERIODICALLY CHECK THE TIRE AIR PRESSURE I DETECTED THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT RESULTED IN CATASTROPHIC TIRE FAILURE. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN EXACERBATED BECAUSE THE TIRES ARE ON BACK ORDER AND ARE NOT READILY AVAILABLE IN THE UNITED STATES. I HAD TO WAIT OVER TWO WEEKS TO REPLACE THE INITIAL FAILURES AND AM CURRENTLY WAITING TO REPLACE ANOTHER.

NHTSA complaint 853330

FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE DEVELOPED A BUBBLE AFTER GOING OVER A SMALL POTHOLE AT UNDER 30MPH. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH THIS CAR THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR JUST OVER 3 MONTHS AND 1,800 MILES. *TT THESE STOCK TIRES ON 2011 BMW 535I AWD WITH SPORT PACKAGE -- GOODYEAR EAGLE LS2 ROF SIZE 245/40R19 -- CLEARLY HAVE A DESIGN FLAW OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND MUST BE RECALLED. IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN WHEN DRIVING OVER VERY MINOR ROAD HAZARDS MIGHT CAUSE TIRE BLISTERS THAT COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A BLOWOUT.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Goodyear Eagle LS 2 ROF tires?
Across 32 written complaints, the most common description is bubble or bulge in the tire, in 84% of reports; about 14.3× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Goodyear Eagle LS 2 ROF recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Goodyear Eagle LS 2 ROF tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 4,700 miles, with 8 in 10 between 1,830 and 16,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
