The evidence base

181Written owner reports
5Reported crashes
4Reported injuries

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Sidewall failure appears in 37% of these reports; about 2.5× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 181 reports filed against the Goodyear Eagle Rs-a across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

In owners' own words

Verbatim excerpts from complaints filed with NHTSA about Goodyear Eagle Rs-a. Reports are published by NHTSA as filed and are lightly cleaned here only to remove intake codes.

WE BOUGHT TWO NEW CARS AND THESE TIRES WERE STANDARD EQUIPMENT ON BOTH OF THEM.WE HAD TWO BLOWOUTS IN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS.BOTH SET OF TIRES COVERED 3500/2117 MILES RESPECTIVELY.TIRES VALVES WERE CHECKED ONE SET OF TIRES IS LOSING PRESSURE CONSTANTLY.MY NEXT STEP IS TO FILE COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA TO TRIGGER A INVESTIGATION.MY ADVICE IS IF YOU HAD ISSUES WITH THESE TIRES IS TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA TO PREVENT ANY BODY FROM GETTING INJURED.

NHTSA complaint 1020433

4 TIRE SIDEWALL DRY ROT LEADING TO A PARTIAL SIDEWALL SEPARATION ON 1 TIRE, APPROXIMATELY 1 INCH IN SIZE. THESE WERE NEW 50,000 MI TIRES ON A NEW CHEVROLET. THEY WERE REPLACED AT 48,000 MI., THERE WAS PLENTY OF TREAD AT TIME OF REPLACEMENT. ALL 4 WERE REPLACED BY DEALER. I HAVE A PICTURE IF NEEDED.

NHTSA complaint 1623444

2006 NISSAN MAXIMA WITH 19000 MILES WAS TRAVELING 70 MPH ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WHEN THE LEFT REAR TIRE TREAD SEPARATED COMPLETELY FROM THE REST OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE FAILURE CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL AND SPIN INTO CONCRETE DIVIDER AT CENTER OF INTERSTATE.

NHTSA complaint 617302

AFTER 24,000 MILES THE GOODYEAR EAGLE TIRES ON MY 2005 NISSAN MAXIMA DEVELOPED A BUBBLE ON THE SIDEWALL IN EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT ON BOTH TIRES. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE GOODYEAR DEALER FOR WARRANTY REPAIR THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NOT COVERED AND THEY SAID THE TIRES HAD AN "IMPACT BREAK." THEY SAID THIS WAS NOT UNCOMMON IN THIS TIRE AND THEY SEE IT ALL THE TIME.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Goodyear Eagle Rs-a tires?
Across 181 written complaints, the most common description is sidewall failure, in 37% of reports; about 2.5× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Goodyear Eagle Rs-a recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Goodyear Eagle Rs-a tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 23,667 miles, with 8 in 10 between 10,000 and 48,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Goodyear Eagle Rs-a failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 5 crashes and 4 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
