How we ranked these tires for the volvo 940

We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 185/65R15; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:

For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

ON 2 OCCASIONS (10/96/ AND 8/00), I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER DURING THE ANNUAL INSPECTION, THAT THERE WAS A BUBBLE ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE, NOT VISIBLE TO THE EYE. IN OCTOBER 1996, I HAD TO REPLACE THE RIM AS WELL AS THE TIRE. IN AUGUST, THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A BUBBLE ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE HOWEVER I DID NOT HAVE TO REPLACE THE RIM BUT ONLY THE TIRE. UPON CALLING GOODYEAR, THEY WANTED ME TO SEND THE TIRES TO THEM AS THEY WERE OUT OF WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM THOUGH IS THAT IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM (A BUBBLE) WITH THE SAME TIRE EACH WITH VERY LITTLE MILEAGE ON THEM.

NHTSA complaint 241413 · 1994 vehicle

JUST HAD TIRES REPLACED FOR THE 3RD TIME AND OUR VEHICLE ONLY HAS 53,000 ORIGINAL MILES. WE HAVE OUR TIRES ROTATED EVERY 5,000 MILES. OUR FIRST SET OF TIRES WERE GOODYEARS 60,000 MILE WARRANTY AND OUR SECOND SET WERE FIRESTONE 80,000 MILE WARRANTY. NO ONE SEEMS TO NO WHY THEY ARE WEARING SO RAPIDLY. OUR VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT BEFORE AND WE PURCHASED IT NEW IN 1995. WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY OUR GAS PEDAL COLLAPSED AND WE COULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE THROTTLE LINKAGE HAD COME APART.

NHTSA complaint 266374 · 1995 vehicle

WHILE DRIVING A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE FRONT. CONSUMER PULLED OVER, AND NOTICED THAT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE SIDEWALL. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO CHANGE THE TIRE, AND DROVE IT TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MICHELIN, MXV4, 195/65R15.

MICHELIN TIRES CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE AND HAS BEEN REPLACED MANY TIMES**NAR**CC THE CONSUMER STATED MOST OF THE TIRES SUFFERED TREAD SEPARATION. THE CONSUMER STATED MICHELIN HAS DISCONTINUED THE TIRES, WHICH LED HER TO BELIEVE THEY KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIRES. *JB THE CONSUMER STATED THE FLAT TIRE THAT WAS REPAIRED WAS NOT DONE PROPERLY. THE PATCH WAS APPLIED WITHOUT BUFFING THE TIRE TO ENSURE THE REAPER WOULD ADHERE. UPDATED 06/06/07.

FAQ

What's the best all-season tire for the Volvo 940?
The all-season touring slate above ranks the top options for the 185/65R15 OEM size. The leader is selected by matching volvo-segment fitment, all-season compound class, and premium-brand quality bonus. For most Volvo 940 owners, the all-season touring pick is the best one-tire compromise; long warranty, low noise, reasonable cost per mile.
Should I get a cheaper tire for my Volvo 940?
The budget slate above ranks tires by cost-per-warranty-mile, ignoring brand premium. The budget pick is genuinely competitive on durability metrics; the trade-off is shorter warranty and slightly higher cabin noise, not actual safety risk. If you drive less than 15,000 miles a year, the budget pick will outlast your replacement window regardless.
Does the Volvo 940 need winter tires?
If you see more than 5 snow days a year or drive at sustained temperatures below 7 °C, yes; winter compounds stay pliable in cold where all-season rubber hardens, which translates directly to shorter braking distances. The winter pick above is 3PMSF severe-snow rated and works for the 185/65R15 OEM fitment. Storage cost is real (4 extra tires somewhere), but the safety margin in winter conditions is substantial.
Can I run a different tire size on my Volvo 940?
Plus-size and minus-size alternatives within ±3% overall diameter are typically safe per the ETRTO standard. See the 185/65R15 upsize options for the full categorised alternatives table with verdicts.
Where can I buy these tires?
Each tire links to its detail page with live pricing from our online retailer partners. Out-the-door cost (including mount, balance, TPMS service, and disposal) varies by state; use the install cost calculator for a realistic estimate.
