How we ranked these tires for the saturn SL

We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 185/65R14; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:

For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

PE00020; ORIGINAL TIRE EQUIPMENT ON A 1997 SATURN SL2, TIRE SIZE P18565R15, AND DOT NUMBER NOT AVAILABLE. TIRES ONLY HAD UNDER 27 THOUSAND MILES ON THEM. WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE TREAD SEPARATED, TREAD PEALED OFF, AND CAME INTO CONTACT WITH FUEL PUMP WIRING HARNESS WHICH CAUSED LOSS OF ALL POWER. ENGINE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP DUE TO THE FUEL NOT CAPABLE OF REACHING ENGINE. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, DEALER REPLACED THE TIRES *AK *SLC

TWO REPLACEMENT TIRES IN THE FRONT OF A 1997 SATURN SL, FR480, P175/OR14-845, DOT HYEP, TREAD IS SEPARATING AT 28,000 MILES. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO MECH. HE TOOK TIRES OFF AND SAID INSIDE WAS WORSE THAN THE OUTSIDE, AND TREAD WAS GETTING READY TO SEPARATE FROM THE SIDEWALL.

NHTSA complaint 231370 · 1997 vehicle

I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 50 MPH AS THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE BLEW OUT, I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR, SWERVED OVER A LANE THEN OFF THE HIGHWAY, HITTING THE CURB AND ENDING UP IN A GRASSY AREA. THE POLICE ARRIVED AND COURTESY PATROL ARRIVED TO ASSIST IN CHANGING THE TIRE. THEIR OBJECTIVE WAS TO IMMEDIATELY GET ME ON MY WAY, SO THE COURTESY WORKER THREW MY TIRE INTO THE TRUNK AND I LEFT. WHEN I GOT TO THE TIRE STORE WE EVALUATED THE TIRE AND 40% OF THE TIRE HAD SEPARATION. THE CAR HAS MAINTENANCE DONE EVERY 3000 MILES, SO TIRES WERE ROTATED AND PROPERLY INFLATED.

NHTSA complaint 232369 · 1999 vehicle

DRIVING MY 1995 SATURN SL1 AT 65MPH, MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE IMMEDIATELY WENT FLAT. I WAS ABLE TO GUIDE THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER IN LESS THAN 200 YARDS AND CHANGE THE TIRE. THE LOCAL SHOP SAID THE VALVE STEM WAS "DRY ROTTED" AND SO THEY REPLACED IT. VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE OTHER TIRE VALVE STEMS SHOWS CRACKS. THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED AT WAL MART IN SUMMER 2007.

FAQ

What's the best all-season tire for the Saturn SL?
The all-season touring slate above ranks the top options for the 185/65R14 OEM size. The leader is selected by matching saturn-segment fitment, all-season compound class, and premium-brand quality bonus. For most Saturn SL owners, the all-season touring pick is the best one-tire compromise; long warranty, low noise, reasonable cost per mile.
Should I get a cheaper tire for my Saturn SL?
The budget slate above ranks tires by cost-per-warranty-mile, ignoring brand premium. The budget pick is genuinely competitive on durability metrics; the trade-off is shorter warranty and slightly higher cabin noise, not actual safety risk. If you drive less than 15,000 miles a year, the budget pick will outlast your replacement window regardless.
Does the Saturn SL need winter tires?
If you see more than 5 snow days a year or drive at sustained temperatures below 7 °C, yes; winter compounds stay pliable in cold where all-season rubber hardens, which translates directly to shorter braking distances. The winter pick above is 3PMSF severe-snow rated and works for the 185/65R14 OEM fitment. Storage cost is real (4 extra tires somewhere), but the safety margin in winter conditions is substantial.
Can I run a different tire size on my Saturn SL?
Plus-size and minus-size alternatives within ±3% overall diameter are typically safe per the ETRTO standard. See the 185/65R14 upsize options for the full categorised alternatives table with verdicts.
Where can I buy these tires?
Each tire links to its detail page with live pricing from our online retailer partners. Out-the-door cost (including mount, balance, TPMS service, and disposal) varies by state; use the install cost calculator for a realistic estimate.
