Sidewall failure appears in 53% of these reports; about 3.5× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 36 reports filed against the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

AFTER HAVING 4 NEW GOODYEAR ASSURANCE FUEL-MAX TIRES FOR APPROX 10 MONTHS AND 10,000 MILES, OBSERVED BULGES FORMING ON SIDEWALLS OF 3 OUT OF 4 TIRES. GOODYEAR WAS UNWILLING TO RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM AS A DEFECT, BUT AFTER MULTIPLE CALLS TO CUSTOMER SUPPORT, THEY REPLACED THE 3 TIRES EXHIBITING THE PROBLEM WITH A DIFFERENT MODEL TIRE AT NO COST AS A MATTER OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. SINCE MANY PEOPLE HAVE POSTED SIMILAR PROBLEMS, AND INDEED ANOTHER CUSTOMER WAS IN THE SHOP WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN I WAS THERE, AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE PERFORMED. DOT NUMBERS: M7MFJC1R4311 M7MFJC1R2012.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR ASSURANCE FUEL MAX TIRES, SIZE P195/65R15. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE CONTACT FELT A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. AS A RESULT, THE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE THE TIRE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE TIRE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000. THE APPROXIMATE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100.
2012 CHEVROLET VOLT WAS PURCHASED NEW. TIRES HAVE ABOUT 16,000 MILES. SIDEWALKS ARE CRACKING, CONSISTENT WITH "DRY ROT". ONE TIRE THE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT WHILE DRIVING. ANOTHER TIRE HAS DANGEROUS LOOKING CRACKING. TIRES ARE NOT THAT OLD AND THIS LEVEL OF DETERIORATION IS ABNORMAL. DOT NUMBER 43BR JANR 3311 GOODYEAR ASSURANCE FUEL MAX THIS SORT OF FAILURE CAN LEAD TO DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY.
I PUT NEW GOODYEAR ASSURANCE FUEL MAX ON MY 2008 NISSAN QUEST ON 04/27/2012. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS BLOW OUTS AND SLOW LEAKS. I HAVE REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS REPAIRS. I JUST REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH MICHELIN BRAND AS I COULD NOT GET 10,000 MILES WITH OUT A BLOWOUT ON THE GOODYEARS. ALL TIRE FAILURES WERE DUE TO SMALL SPLITS IN THE TREAD OR SIDE WALL.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.

Goodyear assurance fuel max: what the numbers tell you
Manufacturer treadwear data for the Assurance Fuel Max is not publicly listed. This is common for OEM-only or track-day tires that don't carry a US treadwear warranty. No mileage warranty is published for this tire, which is typical for performance summer and track-day rubber where the manufacturer doesn't make wear-life claims.
Cabin noise data for this tire is not published by the manufacturer. As a general tire built for the passenger segment, the Assurance Fuel Max is positioned against direct rivals within the same category. Comparing it to a tire in a different category (e.g. summer vs all-season) makes the spec sheet misleading because the design targets are not the same.
Our best tire for enhanced fuel savings plus confident traction in changing weather conditions. Save up to 2,600 mi./4,000 km worth of gas over the life of 4 tires (based on internal testing).**
