How we ranked these tires for the saab 9-5

We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 245/45R18; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:

For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

With only 670 miles on a new set of tires, an inspection for a completely unrelated reason found that there was a bulge in 3 of the 4 NEW tires. Installed in Jun, issue found in Dec; car is driven very little. Tires were purchased from Tire Rack and installed by Discount Tire. Inspection by Discount tire found the 3 defective tires. They report bulges as "impact damage". I have had one other tire ever with impact damage in 180,000 miles on this 20+ year old car. On this set of tires, there were no incidents, such as hitting a curb or pothole. I have to believe that these tires have a manufacturing defect. For all I know, they had a sidewall bulge from day one. I am replacing all four tires. I have contacted Vredestein customer service, at both domestic and international email customer service contacts. They have not answered, even with an acknowledgement of receipt.

NHTSA complaint 1962335 · 2001 vehicle

TIRE TREAD SEPARATION DUE TO SUDDEN WEAR ON THE INSIDE EDGES OF BOTH REAR TIRES. NEGATIVE CAMBER ON REAR WHEELS LEADS TO CUPPING AND WEAR ALONG THE INSIDE EDGE OF BOTH BACK WHEELS. WITH CAR FULLY LOADED, TREAD CAN SEPARATE AFTER ONLY A FEW THOUSAND MILES. AT THE VERY LEAST THE TIRES MUST BE REPLACED AFTER A FEW THOUSAND MILES TO AVOID SUDDEN TREAD SEPARATIONS AND LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE.

NHTSA complaint 553090 · 2003 vehicle

WHILE TRYING TO GET MY CAR INSPECTED, THE TECHNICIAN FOUND SOME VERY CONCERNING UNEVEN WEAR IN THE INSIDE EDGE OF ONE OF THE TIRES. AFTER DOING RESEARCH IT SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE FOR MY CAR MODEL. IF THE WEAR IS LEFT UNCHECKED CAN BE A HAZARD FOR EVERYONE ON THE ROAD, FORTUNATELY IT WAS CAUGHT ON TIME, BUT THE FACT THAT THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN ISSUE WITH NO REAL FIX AVAILABLE MAKES ME WANT TO REPORT IT. THE CAR IS A 2003 SAAB 9-5 AERO, BUT THE DEFECT AFFECTS ALL TRIMS AND YEARS OF THIS MODEL CAR.

FAQ

What's the best all-season tire for the Saab 9-5?
The all-season touring slate above ranks the top options for the 245/45R18 OEM size. The leader is selected by matching saab-segment fitment, all-season compound class, and premium-brand quality bonus. For most Saab 9-5 owners, the all-season touring pick is the best one-tire compromise; long warranty, low noise, reasonable cost per mile.
Should I get a cheaper tire for my Saab 9-5?
The budget slate above ranks tires by cost-per-warranty-mile, ignoring brand premium. The budget pick is genuinely competitive on durability metrics; the trade-off is shorter warranty and slightly higher cabin noise, not actual safety risk. If you drive less than 15,000 miles a year, the budget pick will outlast your replacement window regardless.
Does the Saab 9-5 need winter tires?
If you see more than 5 snow days a year or drive at sustained temperatures below 7 °C, yes; winter compounds stay pliable in cold where all-season rubber hardens, which translates directly to shorter braking distances. The winter pick above is 3PMSF severe-snow rated and works for the 245/45R18 OEM fitment. Storage cost is real (4 extra tires somewhere), but the safety margin in winter conditions is substantial.
Can I run a different tire size on my Saab 9-5?
Plus-size and minus-size alternatives within ±3% overall diameter are typically safe per the ETRTO standard. See the 245/45R18 upsize options for the full categorised alternatives table with verdicts.
Where can I buy these tires?
Each tire links to its detail page with live pricing from our online retailer partners. Out-the-door cost (including mount, balance, TPMS service, and disposal) varies by state; use the install cost calculator for a realistic estimate.
