Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 265/35R18; one rim size up, -0.09% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 265/30R19; two rim sizes up, -0.26% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2009 saab 9-5
The 2009 Saab 9-5 ships from the factory on 235/45R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. Only one approved fitment is documented for this model year, so replacement options should match the original size exactly unless a plus-size upgrade is being considered. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Saab 9-5 comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2009 Saab 9-5 owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2009 Saab 9-5, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SAAB 9-5 EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE CHAMPION HR TIRES, SIZE: 235/45R/17 (NA). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SIDEWALLS OF TWO TIRES WERE CRACKED. FIRESTONE INSPECTED THE TIRES AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE CONTACT RAN OVER THE UTILITY, WHICH CAUSED THE CRACKS. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 187,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 25,000.
With only 670 miles on a new set of tires, an inspection for a completely unrelated reason found that there was a bulge in 3 of the 4 NEW tires. Installed in Jun, issue found in Dec; car is driven very little. Tires were purchased from Tire Rack and installed by Discount Tire. Inspection by Discount tire found the 3 defective tires. They report bulges as "impact damage". I have had one other tire ever with impact damage in 180,000 miles on this 20+ year old car. On this set of tires, there were no incidents, such as hitting a curb or pothole. I have to believe that these tires have a manufacturing defect. For all I know, they had a sidewall bulge from day one. I am replacing all four tires. I have contacted Vredestein customer service, at both domestic and international email customer service contacts. They have not answered, even with an acknowledgement of receipt.
TIRE TREAD SEPARATION DUE TO SUDDEN WEAR ON THE INSIDE EDGES OF BOTH REAR TIRES. NEGATIVE CAMBER ON REAR WHEELS LEADS TO CUPPING AND WEAR ALONG THE INSIDE EDGE OF BOTH BACK WHEELS. WITH CAR FULLY LOADED, TREAD CAN SEPARATE AFTER ONLY A FEW THOUSAND MILES. AT THE VERY LEAST THE TIRES MUST BE REPLACED AFTER A FEW THOUSAND MILES TO AVOID SUDDEN TREAD SEPARATIONS AND LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE.
WHILE TRYING TO GET MY CAR INSPECTED, THE TECHNICIAN FOUND SOME VERY CONCERNING UNEVEN WEAR IN THE INSIDE EDGE OF ONE OF THE TIRES. AFTER DOING RESEARCH IT SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE FOR MY CAR MODEL. IF THE WEAR IS LEFT UNCHECKED CAN BE A HAZARD FOR EVERYONE ON THE ROAD, FORTUNATELY IT WAS CAUGHT ON TIME, BUT THE FACT THAT THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN ISSUE WITH NO REAL FIX AVAILABLE MAKES ME WANT TO REPORT IT. THE CAR IS A 2003 SAAB 9-5 AERO, BUT THE DEFECT AFFECTS ALL TRIMS AND YEARS OF THIS MODEL CAR.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
