How we ranked these tires for the mercury cougar
We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 205/60R15; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:
- Best all-season ranks on a weighted score: tire type matches passenger car segment, season is "all-season", premium brand bonus (Michelin / Continental / Bridgestone / Pirelli / Goodyear / Nokian).
- Best budget ranks on cost-per-warranty-mile; the lower the better. Premium brands get no bonus here.
- Best quiet ranks on the EU tire-label dB rating; lower is quieter.
- Best winter filters to tires marked 3PMSF severe-snow rated or all-weather class, with a small premium-brand bonus because winter-compound R&D is capital-intensive.
For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 30MPH ON HIGHWAY AND HIT A SMALL POTHOLE IN THE ROAD. TIRE SIDEWALL SPLITTED, LIKE SOMEONE HAD CUT THE TIRE. THIS HAPPENED A YEAR AGO TRAVELING ABOUT 50MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, AND A CHUNK OF THE TIRE SIDEWALL SIMPLY EXPLODED WITH NO CONTACT AT ALL. FIRESTONE FIREHAWK #GTA02, SIZE 215/50/16. DEALERSHIP AND FIRESTONE HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE GONE BAD. THE FIRST HAPPENED AT 17M MILES WITH TREAD SEPARATING IN ALL FOUR TIRES. THIS HAS HAPPENNED ONCE AGAIN AT 61M MILES WITH TWO OF THE FOUR SEPARATING AND SHOWING WIRES AND THE OTHER TWO ARE GOING THE SAME WAY SOON. *AK (TIRESIZE: 215/50/16)
I NORMALLY BUY FOREIGN MADE AUTOS. BUT THIS CAR WAS GORGEOUS. IT HAS BECOME A LIVING NIGHTMARE. A FLYWHEEL WAS REPLACED AFTER SEVERAL TIMES TELLING THE DEALER THAT IT MADE A HORRIBLE SCREECHING NOISE AS IF THE KEY WAS ALREADY STARTED. THE NEXT PROBLEM IS THAT I HIT A POTHOLE IN DETROIT AND RUINED A RIM PLUS TIRE. I JUST RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE 2 MORE TIRES THAT JUST SEEM TO WEAR OUT FOR NO REASON. I DON'T DO A WHOLE LOT OF DRIVING. LAST MONTH THEY REPLACED THE IAC SWITCH. NOW I NEED TO TAKE IT IN BECAUSE IT RIDES LIKE A RAGGEDY TRUCK. IT SHAKES AND WILL NOT HOLD THE ROAD. YOU CAN FEEL EVERY CRACK IN THE STREET. MY BOYFRIEND HAS A 88 OLDS AND I WOULD RATHER RIDE/DRIVE HIS CAR THAN THIS COUGAR. I STILL HAVE 1 YEAR ON MY LEASE AND YOU CAN BET I WILL NEVER BY A FORD/LINCOLN/MERCURY CAR EVERY AGAIN. *AK (TIRESIZE: R16)
TIRE ON THE VEHICLE HAD BULGES ON THE TREAD. CONTACTED DEALER. FIRESTONE FR721 205/75R15 (DOT UNKNOWN), REPLACEMENT TIRES, 8OOO MILES, MOUNTED ON A 1973,MERCURY, COUGAR.*AK WHILE DRIVING STEERING WAS WOBBLY AND SHAKY. UPON INSPECTION FOUND FRONT RIGHT AND LEFT REAR TIRES WERE OUT OF ROUND AND STEEL BELTS HAD SHIFTED.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
