Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 235/50R18 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 235/45R19; one rim size up, 0.27% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/45R20; two rim sizes up, 0.04% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2010 volvo XC70 T6-AWD
The 2010 Volvo XC70 T6-AWD ships from the factory on 235/50R18 tires mounted on R18 wheels. 2 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Volvo XC70 comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2010 Volvo XC70 T6-AWD owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2010 Volvo XC70 T6-AWD, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLVO XC70. THE CONTACT STATED THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AS THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BECAME DEFLATED. THE VEHICLE WAS MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH A SPARE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR IN THE VALVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000. UPDATED 09/02/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED ALL 4 VALVE STEMS WERE REPLACED UNDER GOODWILL. UPDATED 9/16/2014
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. WHILE CHECKING THE TIRE AIR PRESSURE ROUTINELY, TWO SEPARATE TIRE VALVES BROKE OFF AND THE TIRES WENT FLAT IMMEDIATELY. VOLVO REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIR ($100 PER VALVE AND PRESSURE MONITORING SENSOR). I REPLACED ALL 4 AT LOCAL TIRE SHOP. THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM. WHAT IF THE VALVES BROKE OFF WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY? TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, THE REPLACEMENT PARTS (VOLVO # 31302096 MADE IN FRANCE) ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AND HAVE NO CORROSION RESISTANCE OR RUBBER COVERING TO PROTECT THEM. VOLVO SHOULD BE MADE TO RECALL ALL OF THESE WHEELS AND TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING VALVE STEMS AND SENSORS AND REPLACE THEM WITH CORROSION RESISTANT UNITS.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 VOLVO XC70 CROSS-COUNTRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES PREMATURELY WORE AT 20,000 MILES. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED BUT HAD BECOME WORN AT 43,500 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE WEARING AS NORMAL. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THE TIRES WOULD NEED REPLACING EVERY 20,000 MILES AS NORMAL. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT WAS 43,500. UPDATED 05/05/11*LJ UPDATED 05/11//
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC70 EQUIPPED WITH GOOD YEAR ASSURANCE TRIPLETRED TIRES, SIZE 215/65/R16. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WHEN THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE SUDDENLY EXPLODED. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND THEN COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A TIRE DEALER AND THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE AND THAT THE IRE POSSIBLY WAS NOT PROPERLY INFLATED, CAUSING THE FAILURE. THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 13,000.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
