How we ranked these tires for the volvo XC70
We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 235/55R19; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:
- Best all-season ranks on a weighted score: tire type matches passenger car segment, season is "all-season", premium brand bonus (Michelin / Continental / Bridgestone / Pirelli / Goodyear / Nokian).
- Best budget ranks on cost-per-warranty-mile; the lower the better. Premium brands get no bonus here.
- Best quiet ranks on the EU tire-label dB rating; lower is quieter.
- Best winter filters to tires marked 3PMSF severe-snow rated or all-weather class, with a small premium-brand bonus because winter-compound R&D is capital-intensive.
For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. WHILE CHECKING THE TIRE AIR PRESSURE ROUTINELY, TWO SEPARATE TIRE VALVES BROKE OFF AND THE TIRES WENT FLAT IMMEDIATELY. VOLVO REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIR ($100 PER VALVE AND PRESSURE MONITORING SENSOR). I REPLACED ALL 4 AT LOCAL TIRE SHOP. THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM. WHAT IF THE VALVES BROKE OFF WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY? TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, THE REPLACEMENT PARTS (VOLVO # 31302096 MADE IN FRANCE) ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AND HAVE NO CORROSION RESISTANCE OR RUBBER COVERING TO PROTECT THEM. VOLVO SHOULD BE MADE TO RECALL ALL OF THESE WHEELS AND TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING VALVE STEMS AND SENSORS AND REPLACE THEM WITH CORROSION RESISTANT UNITS.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC70 EQUIPPED WITH GOOD YEAR ASSURANCE TRIPLETRED TIRES, SIZE 215/65/R16. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WHEN THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE SUDDENLY EXPLODED. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND THEN COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A TIRE DEALER AND THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE AND THAT THE IRE POSSIBLY WAS NOT PROPERLY INFLATED, CAUSING THE FAILURE. THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 13,000.
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM FAILED. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS (4/14/14 AND 8/25/14) LOW PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE, THE STEMS DISINTEGRATED. TIRES WENT FLAT. REPLACED FLAT TIRE WITH SPARE AND DROVE TO LOCAL TIRE SHOP. THE TIRE SERVICE MECHANIC TOLD US THE REPLACEMENT PART IS THE EXACT SAME PART THAT CORRODED INITIALLY. CALLED VOLVO WITH NO SATISFACTORY RESPONSE. SAID IT WAS NOT ON ANY RECALL LIST. INFORMED THEM OF MY CONCERNS FOR A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC SITUATION. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, FOUND THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TPMS SENOR. WHY NO RECALL?
THIS IS SECOND OCCURRENCE WITH CONTINENTAL TIRES ON MY 2012 VOLVO XC 70. SIDE WALL SHREDDED WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING 35 MPH CAUSING BLOWOUT AT 14,000 MILES FIRST BLOWOUT OCCURRED WHEN VEHICLE WAS ONLY A FEW MONTHS OLD. VOLVO REPLACED TIRE AND CHARGED ME $270 SAYING DEFECTIVE TIRES WERE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THESE ARE THE CONTINENTAL 4X4 CONTACT TIRES AND I AM NOW REPLACING ALL 4 TIRES WITH ONLY 14,000 MILES WITH ANOTHER BRAND.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
