Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 195/60R14; one rim size up, 0.07% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 175/60R15; two rim sizes up, 0.31% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 1984 toyota camry
The 1984 Toyota Camry ships from the factory on 185/70R13 tires mounted on R13 wheels. Only one approved fitment is documented for this model year, so replacement options should match the original size exactly unless a plus-size upgrade is being considered. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Toyota Camry comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 1984 Toyota Camry owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 1984 Toyota Camry, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

ON OCTOBER 4, 2013, I PURCHASED 4 TIRES FROM DEALERSHIP. THE 4 TIRES BRAND: COOPER CS4 215/60R16. ON MAY 11, 2014, RETURNING FROM DINNER WITH FAMILY, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE IMMEDIATELY WENT FLAT RESULTING IN CALLING AAA ROADSIDE SERVICE. I TOOK THE TIRE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A HUGE LUMP ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE. IT WAS STATED THAT I MUST HAVE HIT A POTHOLE, WHICH I HAD NOT. I HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRE. I HAVE ALL DOCUMENTATION REGARDING THIS EVENT.
I WAS DRIVING HOME ON ROUTE 287 NEAR THE ROUTE 23 SOUTH EXIT. I BEGAN TO CHANGE LANES TO USE THE EXIT. AS I STARTED TO MOVE INTO THAT LANE, THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME HIT A PIECE OF BLOWN TIRE FROM A TRUCK. I DID NOT SEE THIS AND I HIT IT. THE TIRE RIPPED OFF THE RIGHT REAR OF MY BACK BUMPER PANEL. LUCKILY THE PERSON INBACK OF ME MISSED THE TIRE. IT WAS NOT UNTIL I GOT HOME THAT I FOUND THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR. I WAS LUCKY THAT I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT OR LOSE CONTRROL OF MY CAR. I AM VERY ANGRY BECAUE IF I REPORT THIS TO MY INSURANCE, IT WILL INCREASE MY RATES AND I WILL GET A SURCHARGE. T I AM RESPECTFULLY ASKING THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAY SAFETY TO AID IN THE REPAIRS TO MY CAR. IT IS THE DEPT RESPONSIBILITY TO CLEAR THE AREAS ON A REGULAR BASIS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AREA OF INCREASED TRUCKING AND SHOULD BE TOP PRIORITY.
SIDE WALL BLOW OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEED ON MICHELIN PREMIER A/S TIRE. NOTHING UNUSUAL ON THE ROAD (NO DEBRIS, NO POT HOLE). VIDEO EQUIPMENT IN CAR RECORDED THE EVENT. INNER SIDE WALL 3" TEAR (REAR DRIVERS SIDE). 8 MONTH OLD TIRES, 15K MILES ON THEM. MOUNTED ON 2012 TOYOTA CAMRY.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR ASSURANCE COMFORTRED TOURING TIRES, SIZE 205/65R15 (NA). WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE DRIVER SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A BARRIER. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. WHILE INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE HAD A THREE INCH CRACK PRESENT IN THE SIDEWALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
