Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 215/45R17 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 185/45R18; one rim size up, -0.26% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/35R19; two rim sizes up, 0.13% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2004 saturn ion
The 2004 Saturn Ion ships from the factory on 215/45R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. 4 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Saturn Ion comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2004 Saturn Ion owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2004 Saturn Ion, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

WHILE TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, OBSERVED A SOFT FLAPPING SOUND THAT CAUSED CONCERN. BEFORE I COULD SLOW DOWN OR TAKE ANY ACTION THE LEFT REAR TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE WHEEL AND THEN THE COMPLETE TIRE WAS EJECTED FROM THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE ROADWAY AND CALLED THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL. TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND REQUEST ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE.
IN TWO SEPARATE INCIDENTS WE WERE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF, 65, AND 55 MPH RESPECTIVELY WHEN WE HEARD A LOUD THUMPING NOISE. THE FIRST TIME ON THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE AS SOON AS WE PULLED OVER IT BLEW OUT. THE SECOND TIME ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WHEN WE FELT AROUND ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE WE COULD FEEL A KNOT ON THE SIDEWALL, WHERE IT WAS ABOUT TO FAIL JUST LIKE THE FIRST.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 SATURN ION. THE VEHICLE HAS FIRESTONE INFINITI TIRES, SIZE 195/60R15 (NA). ON THREE ISOLATED EVENTS, WITHIN A FIVE WEEK PERIOD, THE VALVE STEM ON THE TIRES FAILED. THE TIRES LOST PRESSURE OVERNIGHT ON TWO OCCASIONS. DURING THE MOST RECENT FAILURE, WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE TIRE LOST COMPLETE PRESSURE AND THE CONTACT NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HE STILL HAS POSSESSION OF ONE OF THE TIRES. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT THE MANUFACTURERS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 48,000. UPDATED 07/15/08 *BF UPDATED7/15/08.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 SATURN ION. THE VEHICLE HAS THE ORIGINAL FIRESTONE AFFINITY TOURING TIRES. ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE CRACKED TO THE POINT THAT A TIRE GAUGE CAN BE PLACED INSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE INSPECTION STATION AND THE CONTACT WAS ORDERED TO REPLACE THE TIRES. SHE WENT TO A LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT SHE NEEDED TO REPLACE HER TIRES AND THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT PAID FOR NEW TIRES, BUT BELIEVES THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE DOT NUMBER AND TIRE SIZE WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 23,240. UPDATED 10/16/08. *LJ UPDATED 10/17/08.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
