How we ranked these tires for the saturn ion

We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 195/60R15; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:

For sedans and compacts, the all-season touring tire below is the best default; long warranty, low cabin noise, reasonable cost per mile. Switch to the quiet pick if highway droning is a deal-breaker; switch to the winter pick if you see significant snow each year. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

WHILE TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, OBSERVED A SOFT FLAPPING SOUND THAT CAUSED CONCERN. BEFORE I COULD SLOW DOWN OR TAKE ANY ACTION THE LEFT REAR TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE WHEEL AND THEN THE COMPLETE TIRE WAS EJECTED FROM THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE ROADWAY AND CALLED THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL. TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND REQUEST ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE.

IN TWO SEPARATE INCIDENTS WE WERE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF, 65, AND 55 MPH RESPECTIVELY WHEN WE HEARD A LOUD THUMPING NOISE. THE FIRST TIME ON THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE AS SOON AS WE PULLED OVER IT BLEW OUT. THE SECOND TIME ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WHEN WE FELT AROUND ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE WE COULD FEEL A KNOT ON THE SIDEWALL, WHERE IT WAS ABOUT TO FAIL JUST LIKE THE FIRST.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 SATURN ION. THE VEHICLE HAS FIRESTONE INFINITI TIRES, SIZE 195/60R15 (NA). ON THREE ISOLATED EVENTS, WITHIN A FIVE WEEK PERIOD, THE VALVE STEM ON THE TIRES FAILED. THE TIRES LOST PRESSURE OVERNIGHT ON TWO OCCASIONS. DURING THE MOST RECENT FAILURE, WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE TIRE LOST COMPLETE PRESSURE AND THE CONTACT NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HE STILL HAS POSSESSION OF ONE OF THE TIRES. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT THE MANUFACTURERS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 48,000. NHTSA complaint 675354 · 2003 vehicle

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 SATURN ION. THE VEHICLE HAS THE ORIGINAL FIRESTONE AFFINITY TOURING TIRES. ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE CRACKED TO THE POINT THAT A TIRE GAUGE CAN BE PLACED INSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE INSPECTION STATION AND THE CONTACT WAS ORDERED TO REPLACE THE TIRES. SHE WENT TO A LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT SHE NEEDED TO REPLACE HER TIRES AND THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT PAID FOR NEW TIRES, BUT BELIEVES THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE DOT NUMBER AND TIRE SIZE WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 23,240. UPDATED 10/16/08. *LJ UPDATED 10/17/08.

FAQ

What's the best all-season tire for the Saturn Ion?
The all-season touring slate above ranks the top options for the 195/60R15 OEM size. The leader is selected by matching saturn-segment fitment, all-season compound class, and premium-brand quality bonus. For most Saturn Ion owners, the all-season touring pick is the best one-tire compromise; long warranty, low noise, reasonable cost per mile.
Should I get a cheaper tire for my Saturn Ion?
The budget slate above ranks tires by cost-per-warranty-mile, ignoring brand premium. The budget pick is genuinely competitive on durability metrics; the trade-off is shorter warranty and slightly higher cabin noise, not actual safety risk. If you drive less than 15,000 miles a year, the budget pick will outlast your replacement window regardless.
Does the Saturn Ion need winter tires?
If you see more than 5 snow days a year or drive at sustained temperatures below 7 °C, yes; winter compounds stay pliable in cold where all-season rubber hardens, which translates directly to shorter braking distances. The winter pick above is 3PMSF severe-snow rated and works for the 195/60R15 OEM fitment. Storage cost is real (4 extra tires somewhere), but the safety margin in winter conditions is substantial.
Can I run a different tire size on my Saturn Ion?
Plus-size and minus-size alternatives within ±3% overall diameter are typically safe per the ETRTO standard. See the 195/60R15 upsize options for the full categorised alternatives table with verdicts.
Where can I buy these tires?
Each tire links to its detail page with live pricing from our online retailer partners. Out-the-door cost (including mount, balance, TPMS service, and disposal) varies by state; use the install cost calculator for a realistic estimate.
