Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 255/55R20; one rim size up, -0.01% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 255/50R21; two rim sizes up, -0.03% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2017 land rover discovery SE
The 2017 Land Rover Discovery SE ships from the factory on 255/60R19 tires mounted on R19 wheels. 4 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Land Rover Discovery comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2017 Land Rover Discovery SE owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2017 Land Rover Discovery SE, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY EQUIPPED WITH MICHELIN CROSSTRO II TIRES, SIZE P235/70 R16. THE CONTACT STATED THE WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING AND THEN THERE WAS A LOUD BOOM SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE TREAD HAD SEPARATED. THE SPARE TIRE WAS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,716. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE DOT NUMBER WAS 4PS 09579050. UPDATED 9/19/14CN. UPDATED 02/12/15
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 LAND ROVER N/A. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE BOUGHT FOUR TIRES THAT TURNED OUT TO BE MANUFACTURER DEFECTS. THE TIRES WERE FEDERAL TIRES, TIRE SIZE 255/45/R20, AND NO DOT GIVEN. THE TIRES WERE PROVIDING SUCH A ROUGH AND BOUNCY RIDE THAT TWO SHOCK ABSORBERS WERE BUSTED IN THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT REMOVED THE TIRES AND TOOK THEM TO AN UNKNOWN TIRE DEALER. THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO REBALANCE THE TIRES THEN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT TWO OF THE FOUR TIRES WERE OUT OF ROUND. THE DEALER SAID THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO SPEAK TO THE TIRE MANUFACTURER TO GET THE TIRES REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT RETURNED A CALL TO THE CONTACT IN OVER EIGHT MONTHS. THE CONTACT NO LONGER OWNS THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE WAS 109,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. *BF
TIRE TREAD SEPARATED WHILE RETURNING FROM VACATION IN FLORIDA ON 30 JULY 2000. TIRE PRESSURE WAS CHECKED AND ALL TIRES HELD 32 PSI PRIOR TO RETURN TRIP. TREAD SEPARATION CAUSED THE REAR OF OUR VEHICLE TO SLIDE FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND NEARLY ROLL. HAD IT NOT BEEN LATE AT NIGHT WITH NO TRAFFIC IN NEARBY LANES, THE GRACE OF GOD, AND SOME DRIVING SKILL THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE VERY VERY DIFFERENT FOR MY FAMILY. AS OF 31 AUGUST WE'RE STILL WAITING ON THE LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER TO RESPOND TO OUR REQUEST FOR REPLACEMENT TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: VN08 IPU TIRE SIZE: P235-70R16 )
BOTH MICHELIN TIRES ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE CONTINUE TO LOOSE AIR PRESSURE, ON ONE OCCASION WHILE DRIVING THE CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE TIRE LOST PRESSURE, SINCE THAT INCIDENT CONSUMER HEARS A LOUD RATTLING NOISE IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND NOW IT SHAKES WHILE DRIVING.
