Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 215/55R17 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 235/45R18; one rim size up, 0.06% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 185/50R19; two rim sizes up, -0.10% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2025 hyundai sonata
The 2025 Hyundai Sonata ships from the factory on 215/55R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. 6 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Hyundai Sonata comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2025 Hyundai Sonata owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2025 Hyundai Sonata, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

THE SIDEWALLS HAVE CRACKS IN THEM, ALL 4 TIRES. THEY HAVE BEEN ON THE CAR FOR 2 YEARS (INSTALLED NOVEMBER 2011) AND HAVE 6000 MILES ON THEM. THE EXACT SAME TIRE THAT CAME ON THE CAR NEW, HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 17,000 MILES BECAUSE OF SIDEWALL CRACKING. THE ORIGINAL TIRES WERE 4 YEARS OLD AND ALL 4 HAD SIDEWALL DAMAGE THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN DAMAGED AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PROPERALLY INFLATED. THE ORIGINAL TIRES WERE NEVER DAMAGED OR UNDER INFLATED. THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT AND A SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAR HAS NEVER GONE MORE THAN 7 DAYS WITHOUT BEING DRIVEN. IT'S USUALLY DRIVEN EVERY DAY OR EVERY OTHER DAY.
THIS IS ABOUT THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM. WHEN IT GETS ABOUT 20 DEGREES F OR COLDER, THE INDICATOR STATES LOW TIRE PRESSURE. CHECKING THE TIRE PRESSURE REVEALS ALL PRESSURES ARE EQUAL AND NORMAL. WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS UP, THE INDICATOR TURNS ITSELF OFF.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA EQUIPPED WITH HANKOOK, TIRE LINE: OPTIMO H431, AND TIRE SIZE: 225/45R 18V TIRES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A BUBBLE ON THE TIRE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE WAS IDENTICAL TO A PREVIOUS FAILURE WITH THE ORIGINAL TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THAT THE TIRE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,005. UPDATED 08/11/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED ALL FOUR TIRES WERE REPLACED AND A NEW HANKOOK. UPDATED 08/13/2014
FIRST INCIDENT, TRAVELING MD 4 WHEN TIRE INDICATOR CAME ON DASH BOARD (MAY 2014) BACK PASSENGER TIRE HAD HUGE BULGE AT RIM OF HUBCAP WITH HISSING SOUND DUE TO ESCAPING AIR (4 31816 215/60R16 YOKO AVID TOURING -S DOT CCF1 F2712 PURCHASED AUGUST 2013). TIRE REPLACED AT NO COST TO ME DUE TO NO EVIDENT OF DAMAGE INSIDE THE TIRE, THUS A "DEFECT" ACCORDING TO SERVICE TECH. DECEMBER 24, 2014 TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 97 S; FRONT PASSENGER TIRE BLEW OUT WITHOUT WARNING; ABS SYSTEM SLOWED CAR DOWN WAS ABLE TO MOVE FROM SECOND LANES TO RIGHT SHOULDER WITHOUT INCIDENT. TIRE HAS ABOUT A 3-INCH RIP FROM RIM UP. WITH BOTH TIRES, I WAS ASKED WHAT DID I HIT AND BOTH TIMES THE ANSWER WAS NOTHING. THIS IS THE SECOND OF FOUR TIRES TO GO BAD IN A LITTLE OVER ONE YEAR. I NOW FEEL THE OTHER TWO TIRES ARE TICKING TIME BOMBS AND MY FAMILY AND I MAY NOT BE SO FORTUNATE THE NEXT TIME THIS HAPPENS.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
