Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 245/65R19; one rim size up, -0.07% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 245/60R20; two rim sizes up, 0.04% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2021 GMC yukon XL
The 2021 GMC Yukon XL ships from the factory on 265/65R18 tires mounted on 8.5x18 wheels, with a load index of 114 and a speed rating of T. 4 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the GMC Yukon XL comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number, in this case 114), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard, here T), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2021 GMC Yukon XL owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2021 GMC Yukon XL, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

Tire Size: 265 70 16. While driving on a straight and level highway, the right rear tire sidewall completely shredded. Tire lost all air pressure and separated from the rim. I bought four General Grabber tires in July 2021. This is the second tire that the sidewall shredded. The first one shredded on the left rear side in July of 2024. There are a lot of General Grabber tires being recalled for over-cured sidewalls but it's strange that there are no recalls on this particular tire.
FIRESTONE TIRE EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING SPEED LIMIT TOO LAKE HAVASU, AZ, MAY 28, CAUSING ERRATIC CONTROL OF VEHICLE. APPEARS SIDEWALL DISLODGED FROM TIRE AND AND TREAD DISLODGED FROM BASE TIRE FRAMING. I BOUGHT A NEW 2002 YUKON XL WHICH CAME WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS LE TIRES INCLUDING THE SPARE. I HAVE ROTATED ALL TIRES PROPERLY AND ACCORDING TO THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE, EVERY THREE TO FIVE THOUSAND MILES. I HAVE HAD THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT CHECK OUT, WHICH WAS FOUND TO BE PERFECTLY IN ALIGNMENT. THE TIRES HAVE 24,000 MILES ON THEM. ALL FOUR OF MY TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE WITH HIGH/LOW SPOTS ON THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE TREAD. THE THREE CENTER ROWS OF TREAD ARE WEARING PERFECTLY CORRECT AND EVEN. THE TIRE SHOP AND THE DEALERSHIP RECCOMMENDS REPLACING ALL THE TIRES BECAUSE THEY ARE A SAFETY HAZARD AND COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE ME TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT AT HIGHER HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
I HAD A TIRE FAILURE WITH A SET OF GOOD YEAR EAGLES LS1. THE TIRE HAD FIVE TO SIX CRACKS IN THE INNER AND OUTER SIDE WALL OF THE TIRE CAUSING THE TIRE TO DEFLATE. INITIALLY I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST ONE TIRE, BUT, IT ENDED UP BEING ALL FOUR TIRES. I TOOK THE TIRE IN TO GET ANOTHER ONE ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE TIRES WERE FLAWED AND THAT I WOULD AND OR SHOULD REPLACE THEM AS THEY WERE NOW A SAFETY HAZARD. I ENDED UP HAVING TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES. MY QUESTION IS, AT WHAT POINT DOES A TIRE BECOME FLAWED? AND WHO SHOULD BEAR THE COST OF REPLACEMENT. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO LOSE A LIFE BEFORE WE CAN MAKE THESE TIRE COMPANIES RESPONSIBLE? I CONTACTED GOOD YEAR AND I GOT THE SUBSTANDARD RESPONSE THAT I HAD GOT A FAIR PRICE FOR NEW TIRES, AFTER ALL, THEY DID PRORATE THEM. AGAIN, AT WHAT POINT IS A TIRE FLAWED? AND SHOULD THE CONSUMER HAVE TO BEAR THE COSTS FOR THESE CORPORATIONS?
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
