How we ranked these tires for the GMC yukon XL
We started with the latest model-year's OEM tire size; 275/60R20; and filtered our catalog of 22,000+ tires to those offered in that exact size. From there, four parallel rankings:
- Best all-season ranks on a weighted score: tire type matches SUV segment, season is "all-season", premium brand bonus (Michelin / Continental / Bridgestone / Pirelli / Goodyear / Nokian).
- Best budget ranks on cost-per-warranty-mile; the lower the better. Premium brands get no bonus here.
- Best quiet ranks on the EU tire-label dB rating; lower is quieter.
- Best winter filters to tires marked 3PMSF severe-snow rated or all-weather class, with a small premium-brand bonus because winter-compound R&D is capital-intensive.
SUV-specific tire models (CrossClimate, CrossContact, Defender LTX) have reinforced sidewalls designed for the chassis mass and often a wider tread for better wet traction at higher curb weight. Use the side-by-side comparison above to weigh the trade-offs against your specific driving; highway-heavy, winter-state, performance-oriented, or budget-constrained.

Tire Size: 265 70 16. While driving on a straight and level highway, the right rear tire sidewall completely shredded. Tire lost all air pressure and separated from the rim. I bought four General Grabber tires in July 2021. This is the second tire that the sidewall shredded. The first one shredded on the left rear side in July of 2024. There are a lot of General Grabber tires being recalled for over-cured sidewalls but it's strange that there are no recalls on this particular tire.
FIRESTONE TIRE EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING SPEED LIMIT TOO LAKE HAVASU, AZ, MAY 28, CAUSING ERRATIC CONTROL OF VEHICLE. APPEARS SIDEWALL DISLODGED FROM TIRE AND AND TREAD DISLODGED FROM BASE TIRE FRAMING. TIRE INFO: FIRESTONE WILDERNESS LE - P265/70R16 111S M/S; TUBELESS; OTHER NUMBER ON SIDE OF TIRE: DD726G G09R (E4) 027680 DOT 8 X 72 WL2.DAMAGED AREA SHOWS A NUMBER ?4601? I BOUGHT A NEW 2002 YUKON XL WHICH CAME WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS LE TIRES INCLUDING THE SPARE. I HAVE ROTATED ALL TIRES PROPERLY AND ACCORDING TO THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE, EVERY THREE TO FIVE THOUSAND MILES. I HAVE HAD THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT CHECK OUT, WHICH WAS FOUND TO BE PERFECTLY IN ALIGNMENT. THE TIRES HAVE 24,000 MILES ON THEM. ALL FOUR OF MY TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE WITH HIGH/LOW SPOTS ON THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE TREAD. THE THREE CENTER ROWS OF TREAD ARE WEARING PERFECTLY CORRECT AND EVEN. THE TIRE SHOP AND THE DEALERSHIP RECCOMMENDS REPLACING ALL THE TIRES BECAUSE THEY ARE A SAFETY HAZARD AND COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE ME TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT AT HIGHER HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
I HAD A TIRE FAILURE WITH A SET OF GOOD YEAR EAGLES LS1. THE TIRE HAD FIVE TO SIX CRACKS IN THE INNER AND OUTER SIDE WALL OF THE TIRE CAUSING THE TIRE TO DEFLATE. INITIALLY I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST ONE TIRE, BUT, IT ENDED UP BEING ALL FOUR TIRES. I TOOK THE TIRE IN TO GET ANOTHER ONE ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE TIRES WERE FLAWED AND THAT I WOULD AND OR SHOULD REPLACE THEM AS THEY WERE NOW A SAFETY HAZARD. I ENDED UP HAVING TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES. MY QUESTION IS, AT WHAT POINT DOES A TIRE BECOME FLAWED? AND WHO SHOULD BEAR THE COST OF REPLACEMENT. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO LOSE A LIFE BEFORE WE CAN MAKE THESE TIRE COMPANIES RESPONSIBLE? I CONTACTED GOOD YEAR AND I GOT THE SUBSTANDARD RESPONSE THAT I HAD GOT A FAIR PRICE FOR NEW TIRES, AFTER ALL, THEY DID PRORATE THEM. AGAIN, AT WHAT POINT IS A TIRE FLAWED? AND SHOULD THE CONSUMER HAVE TO BEAR THE COSTS FOR THESE CORPORATIONS?
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
