The evidence base

30Written owner reports

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Percentages are shares of the 30 reports filed against the B.F.Goodrich Touring T/A across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

DRY ROT IS SHOWING IN BETWEEN THE TREAD OF ALL 4 TIRES. THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED NEW FROM SAM'S CLUB. TOURING T/A DOT (AP5M) (A721) (0212). THERE IS 8/32 OF THE TREAD REMAINING, MEASURED BY SAM'S. I HAVE HAD THE TIRES ROTATED EVERY 4500 MILES. I ASKED ABOUT THE DRY ROT AND THE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT I WASH THE CAR TOO MUCH. THE MANUFACTURER AND SAM'S WILL NOT WORK WITH ME TO REMOVE THE DANGER OF A BLOW OUT ON THESE TIRES. THEY NEED TO BE RECALLED AS UNSAFE.

NHTSA complaint 1238725

I PURCHASED A SET OF FOUR B.F. GOODRICH TOURING T/A P195-70R14 M+S FROM BJS WHOLESALE CLUB IN WEST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT ON AUGUST 29, 2001. INVOICE 3574172, DOT BFRWB01122. ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE SINCE FAILED, ONE AT A TIME, DUE TO INSIDE SIDEWALL BLOWOUT. ALL OCCURRED WELL WITHIN THEIR 65,000 MILE TREAD WEAR WARRANTY BUT THE DEALER SAID THAT SIDEWALL BLOWOUT IS NOT COVERED. IT SEEMS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT ALL FOUR TIRES IN ONE SET SHOULD EXPERIENCE SIDEWALL BLOWOUT ON THE IN SIDE OF THE TIRE WITHOUT IT BEING A FACTORY DEFECT. IS THERE A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THESE PARTICULAR TIRES? IS THERE A RECALL? IF NOT, THERE SHOULD BE.

NHTSA complaint 465395

HAVE HAD 2 INSTANCES WITH CRACKED AND SPLITTING SIDEWALLS OCCURRING ON BF GOODRICH 195/60 R15 TOURING T/A TIRES ABOUT A YEAR AFTER THEY WENT INTO SERVICE. FIRST TIME IT OCCURRED ON 2 TIRES WHICH WERE REPLACED ON OR ABOUT MARCH 2003. NOW THE REPLACEMENT TIRES HAVE A SPLIT SIDEWALL 1 YEAR LATER. REPLACING THEM WITH ANOTHER BRAND OF TIRE BEFORE A FATAL ACCIDENT DOES OCCUR DUE TO A BLOWOUT.

NHTSA complaint 466429

LAST MONTH, SIDEWALL FAILURE OF BF GOODRICH TOURING PRO 225/60R16 H-RATED. PURCHASED REPLACEMENT TIRE AT SAM'S CLUB 3 WEEKS AGO. TODAY, THE REPLACEMENT TIRE FAILED - SOME TYPE OF TREAD SEPARATION. CONCERNED AS I HAVE THESE TIRES ON BOTH MY 05 SUBARU OUTBACK, AND ALSO MY 97 VOLVO 850. ONLY THE 2ND INCIDENT DATE IS NOTED.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with B.F.Goodrich Touring T/A tires?
Across 30 written complaints, the most common description is sidewall failure, in 23% of reports; about 1.6× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the B.F.Goodrich Touring T/A recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do B.F.Goodrich Touring T/A tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 58,575 miles, with 8 in 10 between 4,500 and 199,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have B.F.Goodrich Touring T/A failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 2 crashes and 1 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
