The evidence base

34Written owner reports

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Blowout or sudden deflation appears in 41% of these reports; about 2.0× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 34 reports filed against the B.F.Goodrich All-terrain across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

ON MARCH 31, 2015 MY TRUCK WAS DAMAGED FOR THE SECOND TIME DUE TO TREAD SEPARATION ON A BF GOODRICH ALL TERRAIN T/A KO, LT 285 / 65R20 TIRE (DOT BE3F UH11 0912). MY TRUCK IS A BLACK 2012 FORD, F-350 SUPER DUTY, FX4, LARIAT. 1.WHILE DRIVING ON I-10 TRAVELING ~67MPH I FELT A SUDDEN BUMPING OF ONE OF MY TIRES BEFORE I COULD REDUCE MY SPEED AND PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER TO GET OFF THE ROAD THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE CAUSING DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK AND BARELY MISSING OTHER VEHICLES I WAS PASSING ON THE ROAD. 2.AS I REDUCED MY SPEED AND WHILE PULLING OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, THE TIRE BLEW OUT, I WAS ABLE TO KEEP MY TRUCK UNDER CONTROL AND MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD SO THE TIRE COULD BE REMOVED SAFELY.

THIS LAST WEEKEND I HAD ANOTHER TIRE DEVELOP A BUBBLE ON THE TREAD. LAST YEAR THE SERIAL NUMBER FROM THE BAD TIRE WAS AP70HK11478. THE BLOWOUT I DID NOT GET THE SERIAL NUMBER AND THE ONE OVER THE LAST WEEKEND I HAVE NOT GOT THE NUMBER FROM THAT TIRE AT THIS TIME.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with B.F.Goodrich All-terrain tires?
Across 34 written complaints, the most common description is blowout or sudden deflation, in 41% of reports; about 2.0× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the B.F.Goodrich All-terrain recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do B.F.Goodrich All-terrain tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 12,000 miles, with 8 in 10 between 4,500 and 136,490 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
