Sidewall failure appears in 50% of these reports; about 3.4× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 16 reports filed against the Michelin MX4 across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, the driver's side rear tire experienced tread separation. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the tire was not inspected or replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and recommended a tire replacement. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated there was a complete tire separation failure and cap. The failure mileage was approximately 1,200.

NHTSA complaint 1888948

THREE TIRE FAILURES WITHIN 12 MONTHS DUE TO "ROAD HAZARDS". THE TIRES ARE MICHELIN 215/60R17. ONE WAS A SLOW LEAK THE DISCOUNT TIRE REP SAID WAS DUE TO ROAD DAMAGE, THE SECOND WAS A HOLE IN THE SIDE WALL AFTER HITTING A CURB WHILE PARKING, AND THE THIRD WAS A SIDEWALL BUBBLE DISCOVERED WHEN THE SECOND TIRE WAS REPLACED DURING A COURTESY TIRE ROTATION. *NLM

NHTSA complaint 403858

LARGE HOLE APPEARED IN SIDEWALL OF TIRE ON MY DAUGHTER'S CAR WHEN TIRE CONTACTED CURB WHILE PARKING, CAUSING TIRE BLOWOUT. GARAGE MECHANIC STATES THAT TIRE APPEARED TO BE FLAWED AND PRONE TO SUCH CATASTOPHIC BLOWOUT. THIS IS A SERIOUS SITUATION WHICH COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN TRAGIC IF CONTACT WITH CURB HAD OCCURRED WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHER SPEED. I REQUEST THAT AN URGENT REVIEW OF THIS TIRE BE CONDUCTED, ESPECIALLY IF THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER SIMILAR OCCURRENCES. TIRE INVOLVED WAS MICHELIN MX4, ALL SEASON, P195/65R15, M+S.

Michelin MX4: what the numbers tell you

Manufacturer treadwear data for the MX4 is not publicly listed. This is common for OEM-only or track-day tires that don't carry a US treadwear warranty. No mileage warranty is published for this tire, which is typical for performance summer and track-day rubber where the manufacturer doesn't make wear-life claims.

Cabin noise data for this tire is not published by the manufacturer. As a general tire built for the passenger segment, the MX4 is positioned against direct rivals within the same category. Comparing it to a tire in a different category (e.g. summer vs all-season) makes the spec sheet misleading because the design targets are not the same.

The Michelin MX4 has been part of Michelin's catalog since its introduction, and remains a current-production model.

For an apples-to-apples comparison against direct rivals, see the comparison pages linked from this tire's brand index.
