What owners described

Sidewall failure appears in 100% of these reports; about 6.7× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 10 reports filed against the Continental Extremecontact Sport across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

In owners' own words

Verbatim excerpts from complaints filed with NHTSA about Continental Extremecontact Sport. Reports are published by NHTSA as filed and are lightly cleaned here only to remove intake codes.

Driving gently at 50mph down a smooth road the tire suddenly deflated; I pulled over to swap it out for the spare. On examination of the tire the inner side wall delaminated in 2 places, I could find no reason for the failure. There are no screws or nails or other damage that would explain why it deflated other than the sidewall delaminating. The car had an oil change 4 days before the tire incident and the tire was examined and found to be at the correct pressure. The rubber around the failures seems soft and tears easily. I have a matching set of these tires on my car, same brand and type. I did some searching and found a recall on this brand tire which describes exactly the failure I experienced; when I called the manufacturer they told me my tire does not fall under the recall.

NHTSA complaint 1781294

Tire size 265/35ZR19 driving down highway at 55 mph when tire blew out. I was able to lucklily get the shoulder and it looked like my tire was cut open with a can opener on the sidewall. The tpms sensor was working fine and they were never plugged and had plenty of tread. I sent pictures of the damage to continental that just replies they're not warranted. If you google continental blow outs you will see tires and even recalls that look just like mine. I definitely could of been killed or killed someone else if the blowout occurred on a busy highway because I lost control

NHTSA complaint 1935547

These Continental ExtremeContact Sport 205/50ZR15 tire sidewalls failed instantly with FULL tread separation with NO warning at 70mph in dense traffic on Rt. 95 while driving an unmodified, open-top NA Miata with 105hp. In 35 years and 1,000,000+ miles of driving, I have never experienced a tire failure like this. As both a classic car and motorcycle enthusiast, I am fanatical about monitoring tire pressure, condition, etc.. These tires have only 6000 miles on them and they are rotated every season / every 2000 miles. I use them as a summer-only tire from June - August (due to the 45-degree minimum temperature specified by Continental).

NHTSA complaint 2106420

Normal driving, daily driver. The rubber around the inner and outer sidewalls seems soft and tears easily. I have a matching set of these tires on my car, same brand and type, 4 altogether. I have multiple large torn chucks & tears in the rubber around the sidewall of these tires. The middle section (non-sidewall) seems fine with normal wear. I have lifetime alignment and rotate and balance on these tires when purchased, and maintain this service. I have not seen this issue on other continentals in the past, and the wear is excessive on this brand.

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.

Continental extremecontact sport: what the numbers tell you

Manufacturer treadwear data for the Extremecontact Sport is not publicly listed. This is common for OEM-only or track-day tires that don't carry a US treadwear warranty. No mileage warranty is published for this tire, which is typical for performance summer and track-day rubber where the manufacturer doesn't make wear-life claims.

Cabin noise data for this tire is not published by the manufacturer. As a general tire built for the passenger segment, the Extremecontact Sport is positioned against direct rivals within the same category. Comparing it to a tire in a different category (e.g. summer vs all-season) makes the spec sheet misleading because the design targets are not the same.

The Continental Extremecontact Sport has been part of Continental's catalog since its introduction, and remains a current-production model.

For an apples-to-apples comparison against direct rivals, see the comparison pages linked from this tire's brand index.
