THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ST1100 MOTORCYCLE EQUIPPED WITH AVON STORM ST TIRES, SIZE 160/70/17, DOT NUMBER 8T17100311. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING 65 MPH, THE MOTORCYCLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 420 AND THE MOTORCYCLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,800. UPDATED 06/10/14
1. AFTER 4YRS AND 8000 MILES OF NORMAL USE (PRIMARILY COMMUTING), TIRE DEVELOPED A FAIRLY LARGE BULGE IN THE CARCASS, AS IF AN GRAPEFRUIT-SIZED TUMOR WAS INSIDE. IT IS ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY MORE WORN ON THE LEFT SIDE THAN ON THE RIGHT; THE FRONT TIRE SHOWED A MUCH MORE NORMAL (EVEN) WEAR PATTERN. 2. THE BULGE IS PERMANENT. PROBLEM MANIFESTED ITSELF IN THE FORM OF A CYCLIC VIBRATION WHICH WAS MOST PRONOUNCED BETWEEN 35-45 MPH. THE TIRE DID NOT DEFLATE OR DELAMINATE. 3. TIRE WAS REPLACED AND REMAINS AVAILABLE.
MOTORCYCLE TIRE: AVON VENOM FOR HONDA GL1800 GOLDWING REAR TIRE 1.TIRE CRACKED AND TREAD SEPERATED- LESS THAN 5000 MILES 2. TIRE HAD BULGE IN TREAD, READY TO SEPERATE-LESS THAN 5K MILES 3. TIRE IS GETTING BULGE IN IT, CAN FEEL WHEN RIDING-LESS THAN 2000MILES ALL OF THESE WERE REPLACED BY AVON. I OWN A SMALL MOTORCYCLE SHOP AND HAVE HEARD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THESE TIRES. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.*AK SOME ONE WILL DIE BECAUSE OF THESE TIRES. I ASKED THE REP. AT AVON IF THIS WAS A PROBLEM AND HE DENIED A PROBLEM exists. I ALSO ASKED IF I SHOULD NOTIFY MY CUSTOMERS OF THE DANGER, HE REPLEID "NO". PLEASE FELL FREE TO CALL ME TO DISCUSS THESE TIRES.
THIS IS A REPORT ON A AVON REAR MOTORCYLE TIRE, MODEL AM26 ROADRIDER, SIZE 120/90V17. TIRE WAS PURCHASED AND INSTALLED ON A 1981 SUZUKI GS 650G MOTORCYCLE IN AUGUST 2008 AND DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES OVER NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE GOING INTO STORAGE FOR WINTER. IN MARCH I HAD RETURNED MOTORCYCLE TO SERVICE AND NOTICED THAT REAR TIRE HAD DEVELOPED CRACKS NEAR RIM. UPON THIS DISCOVERY, I CONTACTED COMPANY THAT I HAD PURCHASE TIRE FROM AND THEY SENT ME A REPLACEMENT. I HAVE REPLACED TIRE AND WILL SEND TIRE BACK TO SUPPLIER FOR FULL REFUND. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED, I JUST REALIZED THAT IT MAY NOT BE SAFE TO CONTINUE USING CRACKED TIRE.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.

Avon zx7: what the numbers tell you
Manufacturer treadwear data for the Zx7 is not publicly listed. This is common for OEM-only or track-day tires that don't carry a US treadwear warranty. No mileage warranty is published for this tire, which is typical for performance summer and track-day rubber where the manufacturer doesn't make wear-life claims.
Cabin noise data for this tire is not published by the manufacturer. As a general tire built for the passenger segment, the Zx7 is positioned against direct rivals within the same category. Comparing it to a tire in a different category (e.g. summer vs all-season) makes the spec sheet misleading because the design targets are not the same.
The Avon Zx7 has been part of Avon's catalog since its introduction, and remains a current-production model.
For an apples-to-apples comparison against direct rivals, see the comparison pages linked from this tire's brand index.
