Campaign 24T007000

Component
TIRES
Manufacturer
Hankook Tire America Corp.
Affected models
{"subject":"Incorrect Tire Identification Number/FMVSS 574","potentially_affected":"9"}
Reported
2024-06-03

Summary. Hankook Tire America Corp. (Hankook) is recalling certain Kinergy GT tires, size 235/60R18H H436. The tires contain a tire identification number (TIN) that is missing the 4-digit week and year code mark. As such, these tires fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 574, "Tire Identification & Recordkeeping."

Consequence. Missing TIN information can make it difficult for tire owners to identify a tire involved in a recall. Owners may continue to drive on recalled tires, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Dealers will replace the tires, free of charge. The affected vehicle manufacturer will mail letters to owners. Owners may contact Hankook customer service at 1-800-426-5665.

WHILE DRIVING NOTICED A TIRE GOING FLAT. PULLED OVER & STOPPED VEHICLE TO CHECK IT. SAW NOTHING & PUMPED TIRE UP. FELT AIR COMING OUT WHEN TIRE WAS PUMPED. SPOKE TO MANUFACTURER & WAS INFORMEDTHAT THERE WAS HAIRLINE CRACK IN TIRE (LIFETIME GUARANTEE). MANUFACTURER HAD TIRE REPLACED, BUT SAID NOTHING ABOUT WHAT CAUSED THE CRACK OR IF OTHER THREE TIRES WILL CRACK.

NHTSA complaint 105623 · 1991 vehicle

IN MARCH, 2000, THE LEFT FRONT TIRE BEGAN TO BULDGE AND SHOW SIGNS OF TREAD SEPARATION, UPON HAVING IT INSPECTED, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TIRE WAS IN FACT SEPARATING. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED AT THAT TIME. AND NOW THE RIGHT REAR TIRE IS SHOWING SIGNS OF SEPARATION AND IN CONTACTING THE FIRESTONE COMPANY ON THIS, I WAS TOLD THE TIRES ARE NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND IF I THINK THEY ARE UNSAFE THEN MAYBE I SHOULD THINK OF REPLACING THEM. UPON TELLING THEM THAT THIS IS THE SECOND TIRE THAT HAS SEPARATED I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THESE TIRES. MY TRUCK IS PARKED BECAUSE I AM AFRAID FOR MY SAFTEY AS WELL AS OTHERS. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO GET THESE REPLACED. THEY ARE UNSAFE AND JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT MANUFACTED IN THE DECATUR PLANT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE NOT FAULTY.

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.

What to do if a tire on your vehicle is recalled

  1. Find your tire's DOT code. The DOT date code is on the tire sidewall; the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture (e.g. 2419 = week 24 of 2019). Recalls apply to specific production windows, so this tells you whether your tire is in scope.
  2. Check the campaign. Enter the NHTSA campaign number (linked in each notice above) at the free NHTSA recall lookup, or search by your tire brand and model.
  3. Claim the free remedy. Under U.S. law, a recalled tire is remedied at no cost by the manufacturer; typically free replacement. Contact the tire maker or the dealer that sold the tire; you do not pay for a recall remedy.
  4. Register your tires. Registering with the manufacturer (tire shops can do this at install) means you are notified directly of future recalls instead of finding out by chance.

FAQ

Is there a tire recall for the Chevrolet C1500?
Yes; there are 4 tire-related recalls on record matched to the Chevrolet C1500's factory tire fitment. Each notice above links to its NHTSA campaign. Recalls apply to specific production windows, so check the DOT date code on your sidewall.
How do I check if my tire is recalled?
Read the DOT date code on the sidewall (the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture), then enter the NHTSA campaign number or your tire brand and model at the free NHTSA recall lookup. Recalls cover specific production windows, so the date code determines whether your tire is affected.
What do I do if my tire is recalled?
A recalled tire is remedied at no cost; usually free replacement by the manufacturer. Contact the tire maker or the dealer that sold it. You never pay for a recall remedy under U.S. law.
Are tire complaints the same as a recall?
No. This vehicle has 23 tire-related owner complaints filed with NHTSA, but complaints are voluntary reports of problems; not verified defects and not a recall. A recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Complaint volume is a useful relative quality signal, not proof of a defect.
