How this number is built

This index aggregates every listing of the Pirelli P Zero Nero we've snapshotted across our tracked retailers (currently TireAgent, PriorityTire, Discount Tire, 1010tires, with more coming online). For each retailer we use the cheapest current listing for the model across all sizes the retailer stocks. We then report the median, range, and spread across retailers.

The "spread" is the percentage gap between the cheapest and most-expensive retailer's lowest current listing. A high spread means retailers disagree sharply on price for the same tire model — the strongest signal that shopping around is worth it.

Caveats worth knowing:

Inspired by Matt Cortland's Guinndex, which surfaces the price of a Guinness pint across Irish pubs. The Tirefolio TireIndex applies the same transparency principle to the US tire market.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this tire cost different amounts at different retailers?

Tire retailers buy from regional distributors at varying wholesale prices, run different promotional cycles, and absorb shipping costs differently. Across our 30-day window, the lowest current listing for the Pirelli P Zero Nero was $105.58 (at TireAgent) and the highest was $169.00 (at Discount Tire) — a difference of $63.42 (60%) for the same tire model.

How often is the TireIndex updated?

Listings refresh whenever our scrapers run — typically every 24 hours. Each refresh writes a new daily snapshot, building the time series that powers the trend chart. The "Captured" date on each retailer row shows when that specific listing was last seen.

Are these installed prices?

No — these are the retailer's listed prices for the tire itself, not including mount, balance, disposal, or TPMS service. For an installed-cost estimate, use our install-cost calculator, which factors in your state's typical fees.

What counts as a "retailer" here?

We track US-shipping online tire retailers: TireAgent, PriorityTire, Discount Tire, 1010tires, with TireRack, TireBuyer, SimpleTire, and Tires Easy in active rollout. Local installers and independent shops are not yet included — see our methodology page for more.
