Check a different size against this vehicle
Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 215/45R17 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 185/45R18; one rim size up, -0.26% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/35R19; two rim sizes up, 0.13% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 1999 saab 9-3 viggen-coupe
The 1999 Saab 9-3 Viggen-Coupe ships from the factory on 215/45R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. Only one approved fitment is documented for this model year, so replacement options should match the original size exactly unless a plus-size upgrade is being considered. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Saab 9-3 comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 1999 Saab 9-3 Viggen-Coupe owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 1999 Saab 9-3 Viggen-Coupe, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

DRIVING DOWN STREET AT 30 MPH. LEFT SIDE FRONT SPRING BROKE. SPRING STUCK OUT AND SHREDDED TIRE. LEFT SIDE OF CAR DROPPED, WHICH THEN CAUSED RIGHT SIDE SPRING TO COME OFF AND CUT RIGHT SIDE TIRE. HAD TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT SPRING / STRUT ASSEMBLIES, AND REPLACE 2 TIRES. RESEARCHED PROBLEM, FOUND THAT GM MANUFACTURED THESE CARS IN 2003 - 2006 AND WAS OFFERING A WARRANTY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. MY SAAB IS SEVERAL MONTHS PAST THE WARRANTY DATES BUT NOT THE MILEAGE LIMIT. HOWEVER, MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE ORIGINAL PARTS WERE FAULTY OR DEFECTIVE. VERY DANGEROUS, AS IF CAR WERE TRAVELING FASTER IT COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I WOULD HOPE GM WOULD CORRECT OR PAY FOR A TRUE SAFETY ISSUE.
SINCE 18000 MILES THE DASHBOARD HAS BEEN DISPLAYING "SYSTEM FAILURE..TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM". IT HAS BEEN RE CALIBRATED SEVERAL TIMES. TODAY AT 47000 MILES THE AUTHORIZED SAAB REPAIR FACILITY HAS DECLARED THAT THE MONITORS ARE THE OLD STYLE, WHICH HAS HAD MANY PROBLEMS AND HAS BEEN SINCE RE-ENGINEERED. LAST WEEK, THE AUTHORIZED SAAB REPAIR FACILITY MAINTAINED THAT A RECALIBRATION WAS NECESSARY... COST $105. THE FIX ON THIS IS $550 +. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD! THERE IS NEVER A WAY OF KNOWING IF A PROBLEM SINCE THE MESSAGE COMES ON AND OFF WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING exists!!!!. IN ADDITION THE ALARMS AND FLASHING LIGHTS ARE A MAJOR DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVER! SHOULDN'T THESE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORS BE RECALLED?
RIGHT REAR CONTROL ARM BENT, LEADING TO MASSIVE MIS-ALIGNMENT, AND THE RUINING OF 4 TIRES. SAAB CLAIMS IT RESULTED FROM "ENERGY" NOT A DEFECT. THEY SAY I MUST HAVE DRIVEN IT "TOO HARD." I IN FACT BABIED THE CAR, DRIVING MODERATELY, HITTING NO MAJOR BUMPS OR HOLES. STATE FARM CLAIMS IT PROBABLY RESULTED FROM METAL FATIGUE, NOT AN IMPACT. WON'T PAY BECAUSE NOT IMPACT RELATED. I BELIEVE THE ARM WAS DEFECTIVE. ORDINARY DRIVING SHOULD NOT LEAD TO A BENT SUSPENSION.
EXPERIENCED A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT OF THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE ON MY RECENTLY-PURCHASED SAAB 9-3 LINEAR. THE VEHICLE HAD 13.5K MILES WHEN PURCHASED, THE TIRE BLEW AT 14.2K. WAS DRIVING 50 MPH ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY, DID NOT HIT ANYTHING, TIRES HAD VERY RECENTLY BEEN INSPECTED FOR WEAR AND INFLATION, THERE WAS NO PRECIPITATING EVENT PRIOR TO HEARING A LOUD "POP"; SHORTLY THEREAFTER FELT AND HEARD THE EFFECTS OF THE DEFLATED TIRE. TIRE REMAINED ON THE WHEEL, BUT WAS FLAT WITH A SIGNIFICANT HOLE IN THE SIDEWALL. THE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE WERE PIRELLI P6 FOUR SEASON TIRES 215/55R16.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
