Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 235/65R16; one rim size up, 0.27% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 215/65R17; two rim sizes up, 0.18% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 1998 oldsmobile bravada base-model
The 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada Base-Model ships from the factory on 235/70R15 tires mounted on R15 wheels. Only one approved fitment is documented for this model year, so replacement options should match the original size exactly unless a plus-size upgrade is being considered. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Oldsmobile Bravada comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada Base-Model owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada Base-Model, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

SEVERE VIBRATION IN VEHICLE AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH AND UP. DEALER THINKS IT MAY BE IN THE DRIVE AXLE OR CLUTH ASSEMBLY, BUT OLDSMOBILE WILL NOT LET HIM DO ANYTHING TO THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY DON'T THINK IT WILL HELP. OLDSMOBILE KNOWS ABOUT THE PROBLEM, BUT WAS NOT OPEN ABOUT THE PROBLEM WHEN DISCUSSED AT THE TIME THE CAR WAS NEW. JUST NOW FINDING OUT IT IS NOT THE TIRES AS I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE. DEALER HAS REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES.
SUV T-BONED IN DRIVER DOOR AT ESTIMATED 40MPH. SIDE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY EVEN THOUGH SEAT WAS RIPPED FROM ITS MOORING. ON STAR SYSTEM DID NOT ACTIVATE TO SIGNAL 911. IN ADDITION THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE OPPOSITE THE ACCIDENT ROLLED OFF OF THE RIM. IS THIS NORMAL? ON AT LEAST FOUR OCCASIONS SINCE PURCHASING THE SUV THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT LOCKS WHILE STOPPING AND WILL NOT RELEASE. MUST UNBUCKLE AND RETRACT BEFORE IT CAN BE EXTENDED.
WHILE DRIVING THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WOULD MAKE A LOUD NOISE, THUS DISTRACTING THE CONSUMER. THE DEALER WAS BEEN NOTIFIED. PH THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD A HIGH WHISTLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIX, STATING THAT THIS HAPPENS AFTER THE VEHICLE REACHES 20K MILES, AND GREASED THE AXLE(S). THE LIGHT UNDERHOOD WAS INOPERATIVE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE UNDERHOOD LIGHT, LAMP ASSEMBLY, (STOP), TAIL, AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHT UNDERHOOD. THE OUTSIDE MIRRORS WOULD NOT STAY IN PLACE. THE DEALER REPLACED BOTH MODULES PER BULLETIN 02-08-64-027/BOTH SIDE MIRROR ACTUATORS. SCC
WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY 1999 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA FELT LIKE A TIRE HAD GONE FLAT.. AFTER NOTICING THE PROBLEM I WENT TO PULL OVER AND THE ENTIRE SUV PULLED TO THE RIGHT ALMOST HITTING A PARKED BOAT. WHEN I EXITED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED THE PASSANGERS SIDE TIRE WAS SIDEWAYS.. HALF UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. I CHECKED WITH THE DEALERSHIP WHO I BOUGHT THE TRUCK FROM AND THERE NOT WILLING TO HELP FOR FREE AS I DONT HAVE A WARRANTY.. EVEN THOUGH THIS IS THE SECOND PROBLEM IVE HAD WITH THE VEHICLE SINCE I BOUGHT IT 8 MONTHS PRIOR. I CHECKED WITH A MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THE AXLE WAS BROKEN AND THE BEARINGS AND BALL JOINTS COULD BE BUSTED. LUCKY FOR ME I WASN'T ON THE HIGHWAY WHERE I HAD BEEN 20 MINUITES PRIOR AND HEADING BACK TO.
