Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 245/70R18; one rim size up, 0.11% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 265/60R19; two rim sizes up, 0.16% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2004 nissan titan
The 2004 Nissan Titan ships from the factory on 245/75R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. 3 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Nissan Titan comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2004 Nissan Titan owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2004 Nissan Titan, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

MICHELIN LTX M/S2 P265/70R18 TIRES, 70000 MILE WARRANTY, PROPERLY INFLATED (TIRE SENSORS) AND ROTATED, EVEN WEAR AT ABOUT HALF WEAR LIFE(BASED ON UNROTATED SPARE). 38,561 MILES ON TIRES. REAR PASSENGER TIRE FAILURE (CRACK BETWEEN TREAD) AT APPROX 30 MPH. UNREPAIRABLE DUE TO TREAD CRACKING. UPON INSPECTION, ALL TIRES EXCEPT SPARE HAVE SIDEWALL CRACKING ADJACENT TO RIM, LONGITUDINAL CRACK AT INSIDE OF EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR TREAD, AND CRACKING SLITS SIM TO FAILURE INTERMITTENTLY BETWEEN TREADS. TIRE SHOP RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT AND CALLED IT SEVERE WEATHER CHECKING. THE COMBINATION OF LOW MILES AND MINIMAL TREAD WEAR MAKES THIS PREMATURE FAILURE A SAFETY RISK. REPORTED TO MICHELIN AND THEY BLAMED IT ON AGE. THE TIRES ARE UNDER SEVEN YEARS OLD.
My 2021 Titan, which I bought new in June of 2021 had a sidewall crack while driving. I did read, when I googled Continental/General tires that there has been a recall on Titan and Altima tires due to sidewall blowouts and cracks. The dealership said they never received anything about tires, however, My Titan had a 2 inch crack develop while driving, and I only have 3K miles on the truck. I do not feel real safe with the other 3 on it. This should be looked into.
The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. There was an abnormally loud sound coming from the engine. Additionally, the TPMS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 80,100.
I HAVE A 2006 NISSAN TITAN KING CAB. IT HAS GOODYEAR WRANGLER TIRES SRA 265 70 R18 ON IT. IN THE FIRST TWO TIMES I HAVE HAD IT IN LIGHT RAIN ON GOOD HIGHWAYS IT HYDROPLANES HORRIBLY AT MEDIUM SPEEDS{45 TO 55 MPH}. I HAVE NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF THIS VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES IN LIGHT RAIN. THE TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE DO NOTHING TO CHANNEL AWAY WATER IN MY OPINION. I WENT INTO A SLIGHT CURVE IN THE RAIN AND THE VEHICLE JUST WANTED TO GO STRAIGHT. THE MATCH OF THIS TIRE WITH THIS TRUCK IS GOING TO KILL SOMEONE. THE TIRE OPTION LISTED LATER IN THIS COMPLAINT DO NOT GIVE GOODYEAR WRANGLER AS AN OPTION. SO I HAD TO PUT IN SOMETHING TO PROCEED,PLEASE NOTE THIS.
