Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 195/80R17; one rim size up, -0.01% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/70R18; two rim sizes up, 0.04% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2004 isuzu rodeo
The 2004 Isuzu Rodeo ships from the factory on 225/75R16 tires mounted on R16 wheels. 2 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Isuzu Rodeo comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2004 Isuzu Rodeo owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2004 Isuzu Rodeo, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MILES HR IN 820 I EXITED RIGHT ON THE WEATHERFORD EXIT AND WHILE IN THE TURN THE BD SIDE TIREBLEW OUT AN THE TREAD HAD COME OFF CAUSING MY CAR TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL AND GO DOWN AN EMBANKMENT IN WHICH WE ALMOST FLIPPED MY CAR BEFORE WE COULD GET IT STOPPED IN WHICH IT CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.
DANIEL STANSBURY ON AUGUST 10, 2000, WAS DRIVING EASTBOUND ON INTERSTATE 16 NEAR METTER, GA, WHEN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE SEPARATED, CAUSING HIM TO LOSE CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE, RESULTING IN TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF HIS 1993 ISUZU RODEO. HE HEARD THE TIRE TREAD SEPARATE, WHICH SOUNDED LIKE AN EXPLOSION, BEGAN TO FISHTAIL, TRIED TO CORRECT THE FISH-TAILING, AND LOST CONTROL, AND HIS CAR BEGAN TO FLIP. THE CAR FLIPPED TWO OR THREE TIMES. DANIEL STANSBURY, AGE 25 WAS THE DRIVER AND WAS HURT, BUT DID NOT REQUIRE EXTENSIVE CARE OR TREATMENT. WE HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS AS WELL AS POLICE REPORT. IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECEIVE A COPY.
ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON 1999, ISUZU RODEO WITH 9000 MILES,YOKOHAMA GEOLANDER HT TIRES SIZE 23575R15. ALL 4 TIRES HAVE DEVELOPED CRACKS ON OUTSIDE OF EDGE AND INSIDE NEAR THE BEAD,WHICH LOOKED LIKE TREAD SEPARATION. ALSO, LIKE DRY ROT CRACKS.*AK ALL 5 TIRES WERE REPLACED BY SEARS. *SLC
OEM TIRES WEAR OUT QUICKLY, MY WIFE AND I OWNED 2 OF THESE VEHICLES. ONE WITH YOKOHAMAS ONE WITH GOODYEARS. UNEVEN TREAD WEAR RESULTIN IN TIRE CUPPING AND VERY ROUGH RIDE. HER RODEO WAS A LS 4WD MINE IS A 2WD BASE MODEL. I LOOK AT TIRES ON OTHER RODEOS I COME ACROSS IN PARKING LOTS AND ALL SHOW SIGNS OF UNEVEN WEAR. ALSO ABS SYSTEM IS JUNK. ANY STOP NOT EXECUTED ON EVEN LEVEL PAVEMENT RESULTS IN LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND VERY LONG BRAKING DISTANCES. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND I CONSIDER IT VERY DANGEROUS. IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE "COMPUTER" GETS CONFUSED AND RESETS DURING ANYTHING OTHER THAN IDEAL BRAKING CONDITIONS. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE FURTHER! MY BRAKES JUST FAILED THE OTHER DAY AS I WAS BACKING UP AND I HIT ANOTHER CAR. DT
