Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 225/70R16 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 205/70R17; one rim size up, -0.36% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/65R18; two rim sizes up, 0.32% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2000 hyundai santa fe
The 2000 Hyundai Santa Fe ships from the factory on 225/70R16 tires mounted on 6.5x16 wheels, with a load index of 102 and a speed rating of H. 2 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Hyundai Santa Fe comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number, in this case 102), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard, here H), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2000 Hyundai Santa Fe owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2000 Hyundai Santa Fe, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

KUMHO SOLUS KL21 TIRES SIZE 235/65 R17 SHOWING SIDEWALL CRACKING AT 23,000 MILES. I HAVE PROPERLY MAINTAINED (ROTATED, INFLATED, BALANCED, ALIGNMENT) THE TIRES. ALL 4 ARE SHOWING SIDEWALL CRACKING. I HAVE 2 OTHER CARS THAT HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE SAME CONDITIONS WITH TIRES THAT ARE AT LEAST 2 YEARS OLDER THAT ARE NOT SHOWING SIDEWALL CRACKING. CONCERNED ABOUT POTENTIAL BLOW-OUT AT HIGH SPEED.
ON THURSDAY-OCTOBER 29,2014 I HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT. THEN ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30,2014 MY BRAKES WENT OUT. THIS IS MY SECOND TIME PUTTING ON BRAKES WITH THIS VEHICLE SO OFTEN. AND OUT OF ALL OF MY VEHICLE OWNERSHIPS I HAVE NEVER PUT BRAKES ON BEFORE.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 HYUNDAI SANTA FE EQUIPPED WITH CONTINENTAL CROSSCONTACT LX TIRES, SIZE: P235/65R17. WHILE MAKING LEFT OR RIGHT TURNS, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TIRES SHOWED TREAD SEPARATION AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL TIRE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V624000 (TIRES). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,950.
The driver rear tire may be leaking air and the pressure monitoring system shows the pressure is 27-28. The car was brought brand new from Hyundai of Torrance, CA on 20 Jan 2020 and as of this date, 23 May 2021, the mileage is 2,007 miles. I have taken the car into the dealership twice about the tire (second time was on 20 May 2021) and they keep saying they don't fix tires and it may have a slow leak. I find this unacceptable and I feel like I'm being taken advantage of (I'm a senior citizen). I plan on driving to another state and I want to ensure the safety of myself and passengers. Just now, I checked the pressure monitoring system and the light is not on. At this point, I don't know if it's tire issue or the electronic system issue. Unfortunately, I don't have any documentation, but perhaps the Hyundai dealership have something on their service database/computer.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
