Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 175/65R16; one rim size up, -0.09% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 225/45R17; two rim sizes up, -0.03% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2009 hyundai elantra touring
The 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring ships from the factory on 195/65R15 tires mounted on 5.5x15 wheels. 3 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Hyundai Elantra Touring comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

KUHMO SOLUS KH16 P215/45R17-87H SIDEWALL CRACKING AND SEPARATION. STARTED AT 13K MILES AND FIRST COMPLETE FAILURE AT 15K MILES. ALL 4 ARE OEM TIRES ON A HYUNDAI ELANTRA TOURING AND ALL 4 TIRES HAVE DEVELOPED WEAR AND OTHER ISSUES OVER LIFE OF TIRES. VEHICLE NOT SAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO RISK OF BLOWOUT OF TIRES. HYUNDAI DEALER (FROM WHERE CAR WAS PURCHASED) WILL NOT EVEN LOOK AT TIRES AND STATES THAT I HAVE TO FIND AN INDEPENDENT TIRE DEALER THAT WILL DEAL WITH KUMHO, EVEN THOUGH TIRES ARE ORIGINAL TO CARE FROM THEIR DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI. NHTSA NEEDS TO OPEN AN INVESTIGATION INTO THESE TIRES, SINCE OTHER KUMHO TIRES HAVE FAILED IN THE SAME WAY, AND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ARE PRESENT ON THESE SPECIFIC TIRES. KUMHO WILL ONLY DIRECT YOU TO A TIRE DEALER, AND NO TIRE DEALER WANTS TO INSPECT THE TIRES THAT THEY DID NOT SELL (AGAIN OEM FOR THE CAR).
I PURCHASED 4 TIRES ON 6/14/2013, AND HAD TO REPLACE THEM ALL OF THREE OF THEM ON 8/11/2014. FOR BELT SEPARATION. THE COULD NOT DRIVE THE CAR, IT WOULD NOT STAY ON THE ROAD. I CONTACTED BRIDGESTONE ON 8/20/2014, TO REPORT THE 3 FAULTY TIRES, AND THEY HAVE NOT GOTTEN BACK WITH ME. I HAVE REACHED OUT SEVERAL TIMES TO THEM WITH NO REPLY. THEY GAVE ME A REFERENCE# AND THAT WAS IT. I DROVE APPROX.20,000 MILES ON THE TIRES. I WANT THEM TO LOOK IN TO THE TIRES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT FAULTY. BUT I CAN NOT GET A RESPONSE FROM THEM. THE MAKE IS FUZION TOURING 91H. BY SENDING THIS EMAIL I HOPE SOMEONE WILL LOOK INTO THIS. I WOULD HATE TO THINK IF I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HWY. I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED, WORST YET THE OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD WOULD HAVE BEEN EFFECTED. I CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW SCARY THIS WAS FOR ME.
NEXEN N5000 SERIES TIRES. I HAD TWO WITH SIDE BUBBLES AND TWO THAT THE TREADS ARE SEPARATING FROM THE TIRES. IT LOOKS LIKE RETREADS. ONE TIRE WAS READY TO SEPARATE AT ANY MOMENT. I HAVE PICTURES OF ALL THE TIRES AND A DOCUMENT FROM THE AUTO REPAIR PLACE. LUCKILY, WE COULD THIS IN TIME BEFORE MY DAUGHTER WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED DUE TO THESE TIRES.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA TOURING. THE CONTACT WAS REFUELING THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE HAD FLATTENED AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN TIRE VALVE STEM.THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM FAILED TO ALERT THE CONTACT OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH A SPARE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM WAS REPLACED AND THE ORIGINAL FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS MOUNTED BACK ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 29,000. UPDATED 05/20/11
