Type any tire size below; we'll compute its overall-diameter delta against the OEM 215/50R17 and verdict using the ETRTO ±3% rule.
Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 235/40R18; one rim size up, -0.25% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/40R19; two rim sizes up, -0.03% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2017 ford focus
The 2017 Ford Focus ships from the factory on 215/50R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. 5 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Ford Focus comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2017 Ford Focus owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2017 Ford Focus, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

DRIVING A 2012 FORD FOCUS AVIS RENTAL AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH IN A LOWE'S PARKING LOT. I TURNED TO PARK THE VEHICLE AND THE SIDEWALL OF THE LEFT FRONT TIRE, A CONTINENTAL -CONTI 215/55/16-CONTI PRO, BRUSHED THE CONCRETE CURBING AND THE SIDEWALL BLEW. THE TIRE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED, HAD TO BE REPLACED. AVIS WANTS $200+ TO REPLACE A TIRE THAT SEEMS TO HAVE A SERIOUS SIDEWALL PROBLEM; A TIRE THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON A RENTAL IN THE FIRST PLACE.
ALL OF THE HANKOOK TIRES HAD TREAD SEPARATION. ONE WAS SO BAD THAT IT SEPARATED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TIRE SO THAT IT WAS SEPARATED LIKE A DOUGHNUT WAS ON THE SURFACE. I ALWAYS HAVE THE CORRECT PRESSURE BUT THESE TIRES WERE DANGEROUS WHEN THEY CAME APART. THE TIRE REPAIR PERSON COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW BAD THEY WERE. I KEPT THE TIRES TO SHOW ANYONE ABOUT THESE HAZARDS.
THE NHTSA BY TELLING TIRE DEALERS THAT THEY CAN NOT INSTALL MY MOUNTED SNOW TIRE BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TPMS SENSORS HAVE MADE DRIVING IN THE WINTER MORE DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE FOR ME. THE SYSTEM IN MY SUMMER TIRES HAS BEEN INOPERABLE FOR 2 YEARS AND YOU KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. THE COST OF THE SENSORS IS VERY HIGH AND IF YOU GUYS WANT ME TO HAVE THEM SO BADLY, THEN PAY FOR THEM YOURSELVES. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF NANNY STATE GOVERNMENT TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING TO JUSTIFY THEIR PATHETIC EXISTENCE. SO IN SUMMARY YOU ARE ACTUALLY MAKING THINGS MORE DANGEROUS FOR DRIVERS BY DENYING TIRE RETAILERS FROM INSTALLING SNOW TIRES ON MY VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE A WORTHLESS SENSOR THAT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING TO MAKE DRIVING SAFER FOR ME. I HOPE YOU GUYS ARE HAPPY WITH YOURSELVES.
IN LATE MAY 2015, I NOTICED A BUBBLE IN MY DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INSISTED THAT IT WAS MY FAULT. I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THE TIRE. NOW, NOT EVEN TWO MONTHS LATER, I NOW HAVE A BUBBLE IN MY PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIRE. THE TIRES ARE FROM THE SAME BATCH. THE TIRES ARE CONTINENTAL CONTIPROCONTACT 215/55R16 93H TIRES. WITH THESE BEING POTENTIAL BLOWOUTS, THESE TIRES ARE UNSAFE. THE BUBBLES MUST BE A DEFECT. I NEVER HAD ISSUES WITH THE TIRES ON MY OLD CAR.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
