Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 235/50R19; one rim size up, 0.27% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/50R20; two rim sizes up, -0.38% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2021 dodge journey
The 2021 Dodge Journey ships from the factory on 235/55R18 tires mounted on 7x18 wheels. 2 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Dodge Journey comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2021 Dodge Journey owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2021 Dodge Journey, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

THESE TIRES CAME ON NEW 2011 DODGE JOURNEY. AFTER TIRE ROTATION THE CAR SHOOK AT 60MPH. RETURNED TO THE SERVICE CENTER, WAS TOLD THE BELTS WERE SEPARATING. TREAD 6/32, WITH 21,203 MILES!! KUMHO SOLUS KH16 225 55R19. STILL IN WARRANTY, NO ONE WILL DO WARRANTY WORK FOR KUMHO!!! TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM LOCAL GROCERY STORE, REAR DRIVERS SIDE TIRE SUDDENLY BECAME FLAT. I WAS ABLE PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN MY HUSBAND ARRIVED TO HELP, HE ATTEMPTED TO PUT IN SOME "FIX A FLAT" TO GET ME TO THE TIRE STORE LESS THAN 2 MILES AWAY AND THE VALVE STEM WENT COMPLETELY INSIDE AND ALL AIR WAS RELEASED FROM TIRE. HE PUT ON THE SPARE AND WE TOOK THE TIRE TO THE TIRE STORE AND HAD TO PURCHASE A NEW VALVE STEM WITH SENSOR IN IT. AGAIN, DODGE IS PUTTING FAULTY EQUIPMENT INTO THEIR CARS AND NOT ACKNOWLEDGING OBVIOUS FLAWS IN THEIR VEHICLES. THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A SAFETY RECALL THAT DODGE SHOULD BE FORCED TO PUT IN PLACE.
CAR STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY, STOPPED AT A TIRE COMPANY(BAYARD TIRE IN BAYARD FLORIDA) AND TECH SAID LEFT REAR TIRE BELTS WERE BROKEN. THIS IS THE FIFTH KUMHO TIRE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. I HAD THE FRONT 2 REPLACED IN APRIL OF 2012 (39000) AND THE REARS REPLACED IN SEPT. OF 2012(40000) NOW THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAS DONE THE SAME THING AT 55000 MILES. THIS COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT IF IT WOULD HAVE BLOWN OUT.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 DODGE JOURNEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED AND THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE BLEW. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF A CRACKED TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR AND HE ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT ALL FOUR SENSORS NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 49,000. UPDATED 09/02/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE SENSORS MOUNTED ON THE VEHICLE ON THE VALVE STEMS ARE CRACKING CAUSING THE BLOW OUT. UPDATED 09/16/2014
