Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 245/70R18; one rim size up, 0.11% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 265/60R19; two rim sizes up, 0.16% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2013 chevrolet silverado 2500
The 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 ships from the factory on 245/75R17 tires mounted on 7.5x17 wheels, with a load index of 121 and a speed rating of R. 4 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number, in this case 121), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard, here R), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY THE TRUCK STARTED TO SHAKE, WE IMMEDIATELY PULLED INTO A GARAGE AND HAD THE TIRES CHECKED OUT. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT BOTH THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE AND THE REAR TIRE, SAME SIDE, HAD A TREAD SEPARATION. THESE TIRES HAD 18,000 MILES ON THEM. THEY SHOULD HAVE LASTED A LOT LONGER. WE WERE FORTUNATE WE WERE NOT TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED.
THIS STARTED IN 2007 WITH THE PURCHASE OF GOODYEAR WRANGLER TIRES. THEY HAVE FAILED IN 2009 (PAID TO REPLACE), 2013, 2014. THESE TIRE ARE USED ON MY2003 CHEVROLET 2500 DIESEL PICKUP AND WE PULL A 5TH WHEEL. THE TIRES CONTINUE TO SEPARATE AND THE LAST INCIDENT WAS ON MARCH 6TH, 2014. THIS HAS NOT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT BUT IT COULD. WE WERE TRAVELING TO PHOENIX AZ FROM GRAPEVINE, TX WHEN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE SEPARATED. WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT BETWEEN ALBUQUERQUE NM AND GRANTS NM. THE TIRE WAS INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE IN SEP 2012 AND HAD APPROXIMATELY 18000 MILES. IN AUGUST OF 2013 I HAD TO REPLACE 3 MORE TIRES BECAUSE OF TREAD SEPARATION. GOODYEAR WILL REPLACE THEM FOR A PRICE AND IT'S STARTING TO GET VERY COSTLY. THEY REIMBURSE FOR ABOUT 20% OF THE COST OF A TIRE. I WILL BUY NEW TIRES BUT NOT GOODYEAR. THEY ARE DANGEROUS.
RIGHT FRONT TIRE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT. TIRE IS A MICHELIN LTX MS2 SIZE 275 70 18. THIS IS THE SAME SERIES TIRE THAT MICHELIN HAS ALREADY HAD A RECALL ON BUT A DIFFERENT SIZE. CAN ONLY SUSPECT THAT THIS TIRE SIZE HAS SAME PROBLEM SINCE THERE IS NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE OF THE TIRE BEING CUT ANYWHERE AS INSPECTED BY BLACK'S TIRE SERVICE IN WILMINGTON NC WHICH WAS THE NEAREST MICHELIN DEALER AT THE END OF MY TRIP TO NC. ALSO HAVE PICTURE OF TIRE IF NEEDED.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH FEDERAL COURAGIA A/T TIRES, SIZE 33512.50R/20LT (NA). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SIDEWALLS OF THE TIRES CONTAINED BUBBLES. THE TIRES WERE NOT REPLACED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000 AND THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
