Common upgrade paths
- Plus-1: 195/80R16; one rim size up, -0.01% OD change. Sharper steering, mild ride penalty, modest cost premium.
- Plus-2: 205/70R17; two rim sizes up, 0.04% OD change. Noticeable ride penalty, higher pothole risk, meaningful tire-cost premium.
Use the plus-size calculator to evaluate any rim step against the OEM size.
How to choose tires for the 2008 chevrolet S10
The 2008 Chevrolet S10 ships from the factory on 225/75R15 tires mounted on 7x15 wheels, with a load index of 105 and a speed rating of S. 3 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the Chevrolet S10 comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number, in this case 105), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard, here S), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 2008 Chevrolet S10 owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2008 Chevrolet S10, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 CHEVROLET S10. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NOTICED THAT THE SPARE TIRE BECAME DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE SPARE TIRE CABLE HAD FRACTURED PREMATURELY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,620.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD (LUCKILY NOT FAST AND WITHOUT TRAFFIC!!). I FELT A SLIGHT BUMP. FIRST THOUGHT WAS I HIT A POTHOLE OR RAN OVER SOMETHING IN THE ROAD IN SPITE OF THE FACT I DID NOT SEE ANYTHING. NATURALLY, I CHECKED THE REARVIEW MIRROR AND TO MY SURPRISE, SAW A WHEEL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET WHICH I KNOW I DID NOT RUN OVER- NEXT THOUGHT WAS "ITS FROM MY TRUCK! THANK GOD I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY !!". UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I FOUND THAT THE SPARE TIRE RETAINING CABLE HAD RUSTED THRU AND ALLOWED THE WHEEL TO DROP OFF FROM UNDER THE BED OF THE TRUCK. I CALLED CHEVY TO COMPLAIN BUT WAS MET WITH THE ANTICIPATED RESISTANCE TO WARRANTY REPAIR. I SUGGESTED TO MY WIFE THAT IT WOULD NOT BE WISE TO DRIVE BEHIND ANY CHEVY S10 TRUCKS!
I WAS PULLING OUT FROM AN INTERSECTION WHEN SOMETHING "JOLTED" THE VEHICLE AND MADE A NOISE LIKE SOMETHING HIT THE TRUCK. LOOKING BACK IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE SPARE TIRE WAS LYING IN THE ROAD AND THE CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT IT. I WENT BACK AND PICKED UP THE TIRE. AFTER RETURNING HOME MY FATHER INSPECTED THE TRUCK AND SAID THE CABLE HAD BROKEN WHERE THE SPARE TIRE MOUNT HOLDS THE TIRE UP UNDER THE TRUCK BED. THE TIRE IS CUT IN A COUPLE PLACES ON THE SIDEWALLS AND THE BRACKET THAT SHOULD BE ON THE END OF THE CABLE IS MISSING. I DIDN'T NOTICE IT LYING IN THE ROAD AS I JUST GRABBED MY TIRE IN A HURRY BECAUSE MORE TRAFFIC WAS COMING.
I BOUGHT A SET OF GOODYEAR VIVA 2 TIRES AT WALMART. I HAVE LESS THAN 30K MILES ON THEM. I NOTICE THEY SEEM TO ALWAYS BE OUT OF BALANCE, EVEN WHEN I CARRY MY VEHICLE IN TO HAVE THE TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED. THE OTHER DAY, I HAD TAKEN MY VEHICLE IN AND THE TECH LOOKED AT ONE OF MY TIRES AND NOTICED A BULDGE ON THE SIDE OF ONE OF MY TIRES AND MADE A COMMENT ABOUT THE BELTS SEPERATING AND BEING READY FOR A BLOW-OUT. I ASK IF WALMART WAS REPLACING THEM AND HE SAID NO. AFTER GETTING HOME I NOTICED TWO MORE TIRES WITH THAT SAME BULDGE ON THE SIDE.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
