How to choose tires for the 2008 BMW 535xi

The 2008 BMW 535xi ships from the factory on 225/50R17 tires mounted on R17 wheels. 3 approved fitments are documented for this model year, allowing some flexibility between performance, comfort, and winter compounds. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.

Tire choice on the BMW 535xi comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.

For 2008 BMW 535xi owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.

Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 2008 BMW 535xi, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

I PURCHASED A 2011 BMW 535I XDRIVE VEHICLE WITH GOODYEAR EAGLE LS RUNFLATS 245/40 R19. THE CAR HAS ONLY 19,000 MILES AND FROM THE DAY THAT I PURCHASED IT (IN FEB 2011), I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT TIRES 8 TIMES AND RECENTLY THE REAR TIRES 2 TIMES. A TOTAL OF 10 TIRE REPLACEMENTS. SOME REPLACEMENTS WERE DUE TO BUBBLES ON SIDEWALLS. THE OTHERS WERE DUE WHAT APPEARED TO BE CUTS ON THE INSIDE/OUTSIDE SIDEWALLS. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY BMW OWNERS OF SIMILAR VEHICLE AND EVERYONE IS RUNNING INTO THE SAME PROBLEM. GOODYEAR INITIALLY WAS REPLACING MY TIRES AT NO CHARGE BECASUE THEY TIRE DAMAGE ALWAYS WAS WITHIN TIRE WARRANTY WINDOW UNTIL LAST YEAR WHEN THEY CHANGED THEIR ROAD HAZZARD WARRANTY POLICY AND NO LONGER COVER THE EXPENSE. THESE ARE VERY EXPENSIVE TIRES. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THESE TIRES.....

NHTSA complaint 1033343 · 2011 vehicle

BOTH FRONT TIRES DEVELOPED A BUBBLE AFTER GOING OVER A SMALL POTHOLE/BUMP AT UNDER 30MPH. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH THIS CAR THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR JUST OVER 7 MONTHS AND 3500 MILES. THESE STOCK TIRES ON 2013 BMW 535XI AWD WITH M SPORT PACKAGE -- GOODYEAR EAGLE LS2 - SIZE 245/40R19 -- 98V CLEARLY HAVE A DESIGN FLAW OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND MUST BE RECALLED. IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN WHEN DRIVING OVER VERY MINOR ROAD HAZARDS MIGHT CAUSE TIRE BLISTERS THAT COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A BLOWOUT.

NHTSA complaint 1045388 · 2013 vehicle

I BOUGHT THIS 2011 MODEL BMW 535IX IN MARCH 2011, AND IT CAME WITH GOODYEAR EAGLE LS/2 ROF TIRES. THE FRONT TIRE STARTED TO DEVELOP A BUBBLE ON THE SIDE WALL AND LOSE AIR PRESSURE. A FEW DAYS LATER A CRACK WAS FOUND ON THE REAR TIRE. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY BEEN ON THE ROAD FOR 6,000 MILES WHEN THE ISSUE OCCURRED. THE WORSE THING YET IS THAT EVEN THOUGH THE TIRES ARE UNDER ROAD HAZARD WARRANTY, ALL TIRES THAT COME WITH THIS CAR ARE IN NATIONAL BACKORDER WHICH MEANS CONSUMER HAS NO WAY TO GET THE SAME OEM TIRE. THIS TIRE/WHEEL SET SHALL BE RECALLED BY BMW AS IT APPEARS TO BE DESIGN FLAW ON BMW'S SIDE ACCORDING NUMEROUS ONLINE COMPLAINTS AND BMW FORUMS. THE SAME TIRE IS USED BY MANY OTHER DIFFERENT CAR MAKERS AND THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THEM.

GOODYEAR LOW PROFILE TIRES. 245/40R19 98V LS2. TODAY MY TIRE SPLIT. THIS IS THE 5TH TIRE ON THIS VEHICLE I HAVE HAD REPLACED IN THE LAST 20 MONTHS. I ALSO HAVE A BUBBLE IN ANOTHER TIRE THAT NEEDS REPLACEMENT. THESE TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE. THESE SPLITS AND BUBBLES ARE FROM ROUTINE DRIVING. YOU DON'T HAVE TO RIDE OVER A CRATER TO DAMAGE THIS TIRE. ANY SMALL BUMP WILL BUBBLE OR SPLIT THE RUBBER. GOODYEAR HAS YET TO OWN UP TO THESE DEFECTS. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

Frequently asked questions

What size tires fit a 2008 BMW 535xi?
The OEM tire size for the 2008 BMW 535xi is 225/50R17 mounted on R17 wheels.. Trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment; confirm against your specific vehicle's driver-door placard before purchase.
Can I run a different tire size on my 2008 BMW 535xi?
Plus-sizing (larger rim, lower aspect) is possible within ±3% of the OEM overall diameter per the ETRTO safe-fit standard. The Compatible alternative sizes table on this page lists every safe option for the OEM size. Always confirm with the manufacturer or a qualified tire shop before deviating from the placard.
Where can I buy tires for my 2008 BMW 535xi?
Online tire retailers in our affiliate network carry every size documented for this vehicle. Use the Shop online buttons above to compare prices across them; variance of $20–$40 per tire is common between merchants. The install cost calculator estimates the out-the-door including mount, balance, TPMS, and disposal by state.
What is the recommended tire pressure for the 2008 BMW 535xi?
The cold-inflation pressure is printed on the driver-door placard of your specific vehicle and varies by trim, tire size, and loaded vs unloaded condition. Typical OEM front and rear pressures fall between 30 and 36 psi for passenger trims and 32–40 psi for SUV/truck variants, but the placard is the authoritative source.
Can I fit winter tires in a different size on my 2008 BMW 535xi?
Yes; the standard winter-tire fitment pattern is one width step narrower than OEM (e.g. 225 → 215) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter. Narrower tires increase contact pressure on snow for better traction. The Compatible alternative sizes table includes any winter-friendly options that fall within ±3% OD for this vehicle.
How often should I rotate the tires on my 2008 BMW 535xi?
Every 5,000–7,500 miles is the typical OEM recommendation for passenger vehicles. AWD vehicles and high-torque trucks benefit from the shorter interval. Documented rotation history is also a tire-warranty prerequisite; most manufacturer treadwear claims require rotation receipts at the warranty inspection.
