How to choose tires for the 1986 BMW 535i
The 1986 BMW 535i ships from the factory on the original equipment size tires mounted on the factory rim wheels. Only one approved fitment is documented for this model year, so replacement options should match the original size exactly unless a plus-size upgrade is being considered. The Compatible alternative sizes table above lists every safe substitution within the ETRTO ±3% overall-diameter tolerance.
Tire choice on the BMW 535i comes down to three trade-offs that matter more than brand loyalty: load index (must equal or exceed the OEM number), speed rating (must match or exceed the placard), and UTQG treadwear (higher means longer life, lower usually means stickier rubber). Owners replacing factory tires with the same compound class, for example all-season for all-season, generally see no change in ride characteristics or fuel economy. Switching categories (performance summer to all-season touring, for example) is where the trade-offs show up at the contact patch.
For 1986 BMW 535i owners considering a plus-size upgrade, the safer option is a Plus-1 step (one rim size up with a 10-point aspect drop and ~10 mm of additional section width). Plus-2 is technically viable on this chassis if the alternative-sizes table lists a Plus-2 candidate within tolerance, but expect a meaningful ride-harshness penalty and a tire-cost premium of 30–60% per tire relative to the OEM fitment. For winter use the recommended pattern is one width step down (e.g. from a 235 to a 225) with the aspect ratio bumped up to preserve overall diameter; narrower tires apply higher contact pressure per square inch on snow, which translates directly into shorter braking distances. The plus-size calculator evaluates any specific rim step against this OEM size.
Before purchasing, verify the tire size on the driver-door placard of your specific 1986 BMW 535i, since trim levels and option packages can shift the original fitment from what is documented here. The placard reading is the authoritative source per FMVSS 110, and dealers will reference the placard rather than aftermarket catalogs when validating warranty claims.

I HAVE PURCHASE 5 DUNLOP RUN FLAT TIRES DO TO SIDE WALL DAMAGE. SIDEWALL DAMAGE CAUSED ME TO PURCHASE 3 275/35R19 96Y BMW B DUN SP SPRT MAX DSST RF B & 2 245/40R19 94Y BMW B DUN SP SPRT MAX DSST RF THESE TIRES ARE VERY COSTLY THEY DO NOT PERFORM AND COULD BE DEFECTED.
6 TIRES IN LESS THAN A 3 YEAR PERIOD HAVE FAILED. SOME HAVE BUBBLED. TWO HAVE GONE FLAT. ONE FAILED ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65MPH. THIS SEEMS TO BE A PARTICULAR PROBLEM WITH THE GOODYEAR RUNFLAT TIRES ON THE 19 INCH RIMS ON THIS VEHICLE. SMALL POTHOLES ARE UNAVOIDABLE ON MASSACHUSETTS ROADWAYS. SOME OF THE INCIDENTS OCCURRED DAYS AFTER. OTHERS WERE UNASSOCIATED WITH SUCH AN INCIDENT. BOTH BMW AND GOODYEAR REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM.
THE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED COMPLETELY FROM THE INNER SIDEWALLS. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OR WARNING OF ANY ISSUES, LOW PRESSURE, NO CONTROL PANEL WARNING, PULLING ETC. I WAS ENTERING THE HIGHWAY, ACCELERATED NORMALLY, THE CAR DRIVING NORMAL. THEN SUDDENLY, I HEARD A LOUD PULSATING VIBRATION SOUND AS IF THE TIRE WAS BLOWN OUT. I PULLED OVER TO FIND THAT THE TREAD HAD SEPARATED COMPLETELY ALL THE WAY AROUND THE INNER PART OF THE TIRE!!!
GOODYEAR EAGLE LS2 ROF TIRES. ONLY 4700 MILES ON MY 2013 BMW 535 ACTIVEHYBRID. BUBBLE ON RF TIRE, I AM THE ONLY DRIVER. NO POTHOLES EVER HIT OR CURBS RUBBED INTO. I AM IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY. CAREFUL EXAMINATION OF THE TIRE SHOWED NO SIGNS OF IMPACT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRE OR THE WHEEL. NO DAMAGE TO THE INSIDE EITHER. OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THE TIRE. LOOKING AT THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TIRE ONLINE A PROBLEM exists. IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE KILLS THEMSELVES WITH A BLOWOUT.
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA; they represent owner-reported problems, not proven defects. Counts can be useful as a relative quality signal across comparable tires or vehicles.
