The evidence base

87Written owner reports
3Reported crashes
1Reported injuries

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Blowout or sudden deflation appears in 31% of these reports; about 1.5× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 87 reports filed against the Michelin MXV4 across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

NHTSA complaint 1193607

SIDEWALL OF TIRE SHOWED A BUBBLE AFTER 24,000 MILES ON A 2013 TOYOTA AVALON DISCOVERED BY DEALER ON ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. CONTACTED MICHELIN AND THEY SENT ME TO A DEALER THAT BUMPED UP THE PRICE $25 OVER THE PRICE THE DEALER QUOTED AND ONLY OFFERED 20% CREDIT. I BELIEVE THE SIDEWALL IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. I HAVE PHOTOS THAT I CAN SEND. THESE TIRES ARE A DANGER TO THE REINING PUBLIC AND NEED TO BE RECALLED BEFORE DEATH OR A SERIOUS INJURY RESULTS FROM THE SIDEWALL.

MICHELIN DEALER FOUND WHILE DOING ROUTINE TIRE ROTATION AND REPLACED WITH SAME TIRE FOR A PRORATED PRICE.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Michelin MXV4 tires?
Across 87 written complaints, the most common description is blowout or sudden deflation, in 31% of reports; about 1.5× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Michelin MXV4 recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Michelin MXV4 tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 20,000 miles, with 8 in 10 between 3,000 and 54,993 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Michelin MXV4 failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 3 crashes and 1 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
