NHTSA complaint 1090511

HANKOOK DYNAPRO AS P235-70-R17S TIRE WITH APPROXIMATELY 60% WEAR (ACCORDING TO FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND TIRES REPLACED). DURING NORMAL DRIVING NOTICED ABNORMAL BUMPING THAT APPEARED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH TIRE OR FRONT END. TOOK VEHICLE TO SHOP TO CHECK BALANCE AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT. TECH FOUND THE ABOVE DESCRIBED TIRE HAD SEPARATED AND THE STEEL BELTING WAS PROTRUDING THROUGH THE TREAD AND TOP OF SIDEWALL. TIRE WAS ABOUT TO FAIL. DRIVER CONTACTED HANKOOK AND FORWARDED A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE TIRE TO THE REPRESENTATIVE. HANKOOK AGREED TO A 40% REFUND OF THE AMOUNT THAT FORD PAID (NOT WHAT I PAID) FOR THE TIRE IF I WOULD RETURN THE TIRE OR A PIECE FROM IT CONTAINING THE DOT NUMBER. FORD TOOK THE TIRE FOR RETURN TO HANKOOK. THREE WEEKS HAVE PASSED AND I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM FORD OR HANKOOK.

NHTSA complaint 1142430

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 FORD F150. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE REPAIR SHOP FOR A SLOW LEAK ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE SO THE MECHANIC PLUGGED THE TIRE. WHILE MOUNTING THE TIRE TO THE VEHICLE IT EXPLODED. THE EXPLOSION WAS CAUSED BY SEPARATION OF THE TIRE BEADS. THE MECHANIC MOUNTED THE SPARE TIRE. AFTER DRIVING TEN MILES THE SPARE TIRE BLEW ALSO DUE TO TIRE BEAD SEPARATION. THE TIRE BEADS WERE COMPLETELY SEVERED IN BOTH FAILURES. THE FAILED TIRE BRAND IS HANKOOK DYNAPRO, SIZE, P235/75R17. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 5 MPH WHEN THE SPARE TIRE FAILED. *AK UPDATED 2/22/2007 - *NM UPDATED *JB UPDATED 04/16/07

WHEN I SOUGHT HELP FROM HANKOOK NATIONAL AND MS. JUDY HERSHBERG 973-633-9000 AND THE LOCALK DISTRIBUTOR MIAMI TIRE DEALERS WAREHOUSE' JOSE PHONE 888-833-3953 I WAS NOT ASSISTED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, ALL THEIR SUGGESTIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS FELL ON DEFT EARS. CONSIDERING THE MILEAGE, NOW 34,000 + AND THE YEARS, 3, I COULD NOT IN REALITY EXPECT AN ADJUSTMENT. I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT THE TIRES AND AS MUCH INFO AS I CAN GET FROM THEM TO YOU FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL FOR THE SAKE OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND THE WELFARE OF CITIZEN DRIVERS AND THEIR SAFETY.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Hankook Dynapro AS tires?
Across 72 written complaints, the most common description is cracking or dry rot, in 18% of reports; about 1.9× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Hankook Dynapro AS recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Hankook Dynapro AS tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 17,000 miles, with 8 in 10 between 3,000 and 90,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Hankook Dynapro AS failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 4 crashes and 4 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
