The evidence base

56Written owner reports
2Reported injuries

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Blowout or sudden deflation appears in 66% of these reports; about 3.3× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 56 reports filed against the Goodyear Marathon ST across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 8 IN AZ TRAVELING AT 65 MPH THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE BLEW OUT ON MY MONTANA 5TH WHEEL RV AND DAMAGED THE SIDE OF THE TRAILER. THE TIRES HAD ONLY ABOUT 7500 MILES ON THEM AND THEY WERE GOODYEAR MARATHON ST235/80/R16. THE TRAILER WAS NOT OVER LOADED.THESE TIRES SHOULD LAST LONGER THEN THAT.I STOPPED IN YUMA, AZ AND REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES.

NHTSA complaint 1145398

TIRE COMPLAINT ON GOODYEAR MARATHON ST 235-80-16R. WE PURCHASED FOUR TIRES ON FEB 2014 FOR OUR 2012 CROSSROADS CRUISER FIFTH WHEEL VIN # [XXX]. WE HAVE HAD TWO BLOWOUTS IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR. EACH TIME THERE WAS TREAD SEPARATION. THE LAST EVENT OCCURRED ON MAY 15TH OF THIS YEAR. AS WITH THE FIRST OCCURRENCE, THERE WAS NO WARNING AND THE TIRES WERE PROPERLY INFLATED AND CHECKED PRIOR TO STARTING THE TRIP. IN REVIEWING THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THESE TRAILER TIRES FROM OTHER RV OWNERS, I AM SURPRISED THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THESE TIRES. BY NOT REACTING TO THE MANY COMPLAINTS YOU ARE PUTTING UNSUSPECTING RV OWNERS AND OTHER DRIVERS AT RISK..S.C. 552(B)(6).

NHTSA complaint 1285348

TIRE BEGAN TO LOSE PRESSURE DUE TO SIDEWALL FAILURE. FORTUNATELY I HAVE TPM AND TEMPERATURE MONITORS TIRE (TIRE TEMP WAS 98F OUTSIDE TEMP 88F) ON EACH TIRE AND STOPPED BEFORE THE TIRE CAME APART. TIRE IS GOODYEAR MARATHON 225/75/15 LOAD RANGE E. TIRE WAS INFLATED TO 78PSI AND ON A 2004 ARCTIC FOX 25R TRAVEL TRAILER.

NHTSA complaint 1305801

PURCHASED NEW 5TH WHEEL TRAILER IN DECEMBER OF 2017 WITH GOODYEAR MARATHON ST235/80R16, LOAD RANGE E TIRES INSTALLED. WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH ON A SOMEWHAT CURVY AND HILLY STATE HIGHWAY WITH 4800 MILES ON RV, THE LEFT REAR TIRE TREAD CAME COMPLETELY OFF THE TIRE DAMAGING THE RV IN THE PROCESS. I PULLED TO SHOULDER AND FAILED TIRE HAD A SIGNIFICANT LEAK, BUT DID NOT BLOW OUT SO I REPLACED IT WITH THE SPARE. I HAVE TPMS INSTALLED ON ALL 4 WHEELS WHICH REPORTS TIRE PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE. ALL 4 TIRES WERE NOMINAL JUST PRIOR TO FAILURE. ALL TIRES HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED AT THE REQUIRED COLD PRESSURE OF 80 PSI PRIOR TO EVERY TRIP. THE RV IS STORED INDOORS WITHOUT ANY SUN EXPOSURE.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Goodyear Marathon ST tires?
Across 56 written complaints, the most common description is blowout or sudden deflation, in 66% of reports; about 3.3× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Goodyear Marathon ST recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Goodyear Marathon ST tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 7,515 miles, with 8 in 10 between 1,400 and 11,174 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
