The evidence base

54Written owner reports
6Reported crashes

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Sidewall failure appears in 28% of these reports; about 1.9× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 54 reports filed against the Continental Sport Contact across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

NHTSA complaint 1543626

While driving on expressway alert notification displayed that driver side rear tire pressure was low. These are MOE tires so there is no spar tire and should be able to drive at low speed. Car was bought new and had less than 17,000 miles on the tires. Found nearest exit from expressway and drove slowly to nearby service station. Left driver side tire was flat and would not fill with air at service station. Began slowly driving to my home which was about 5 miles away when had to stop again because of tire noise. Pulled off street and found driver side rear tire was significantly damaged.(see photo) Called tow truck and had car towed about a mile to my home since this incident occurred on a US holiday. Nail found in tire. (see photo). Crack also found in passenger side rear tire. ( see photo)

While driving on the highway, without warning the tire tread separated from the rim causing danger to myself. Luckily I was able to pull to the side of the highway to await assistance. State police was called and the car was eventually towed to the dealership. The entire tire literally separated from the rim. Tire size: 235 /60 R 18.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Continental Sport Contact tires?
Across 54 written complaints, the most common description is sidewall failure, in 28% of reports; about 1.9× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Continental Sport Contact recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Continental Sport Contact tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 10,800 miles, with 8 in 10 between 3,500 and 36,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Continental Sport Contact failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 6 crashes and 2 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
