51Written owner reports

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

Blowout or sudden deflation appears in 55% of these reports; about 2.7× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 51 reports filed against the Castle Rock Radial ST226 across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

Castle Rock ST radial ST226 by Lionshead. Size ST225/75/R15 on the RV I purchased. I bought a new Forest River Cherokee 274RK in June 2021. On 10-08-2021 the first tire with a date code of 1120 had a blow out with the tread completely separating from the tire at 50 mph near Payson, UT. Doing damage to the underside of my trailer. I had the tire replaced at Wal-Mart in Payson, UT. Then on Sunday 01-02-2021 a second tire exploded while the RV trailer is parked in Quartzsite, AZ. (the date code on that one was also 1120) it has been parked here since 10/11/2021 and has not moved. The second tire is available for inspection. I have not had the inspected. DOT: JULT 1MT Speed rating: L Load range: E

NHTSA complaint 1828038

Castle Rock ST225/75r15 Was traveling with a 2021 Forest River RV and had a rapid loss of tire pressure and complete tread separation. Tires were at the proper pressure and driving below the speed rating of 70 mph. Incident occurred about an hour into trip, but less than 15 minutes after a stop and check of tires. Even a flat or picking up something in the road should not cause a full scale tread separation. These are just poorly made tires. No symptoms of problems, just a cheap tire.

The contact owns a 2018 Forest River Wildwood RV equipped with Castlerock ST Tires, Tire Line: Radial ST 226, Tire Size: 225/75/R15, DOT Number: JULT-1MT2617. The contact stated while driving approximately 63 MPH, the rear driver's side tire deflated and became completely flat. The contact was able to pull over safely and replace the flat tire with the spare tire himself. The contact stated that the tire was original equipment. The approximate tire and vehicle failure mileage was 3,000. Additional information, right tire spontaneously blew out while parked in my driveway. Unlike the reported tire which was torn to shreds when the blowout occurred on the highway. VIN is invalid.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Castle Rock Radial ST226 tires?
Across 51 written complaints, the most common description is blowout or sudden deflation, in 55% of reports; about 2.7× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Castle Rock Radial ST226 recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Castle Rock Radial ST226 tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 5,000 miles, with 8 in 10 between 1,000 and 9,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
