The evidence base

78Written owner reports
9Reported crashes

Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.

What owners described

Blowout or sudden deflation is the most common description, in 28% of these reports. Percentages are shares of the 78 reports filed against the Bridgestone Dueler AT across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.

In owners' own words

A MONTH AGO I HAD A BRIDGESTONE A/T REVO SEPARATE AND MANAGED TO GET IT REPLACED BEFORE IT BLEW. THIS PAST FRIDAY I WAS TOWING A TRAILER AND HAD ANOTHER SEPARATE AND BEFORE I COULD GET STOPPED IT BLEW OUT ALSO. FORTUNATELY IT WAS ON THE BACK AND I MANAGED TO GET THE TRUCK AND TRAILER STOPPED SAFELY. NOT SURE I COULD HAVE DONE THIS HAD IT BEEN ON THE FRONT. TIRES WERE AIRED PROPERLY THAT MORNING ALSO. RIPPED MY RIGHT REAR FENDER UP ALSO. TWO OF THE SAME TIRES PURCHASED AT THE SAME TIME SEPARATED WITHIN A MONTH OF EACH OTHER.

BRIDGESTONE DUELLAR AT LT285/75R16 S/N# K9801D693AZ. DRIVING E/B 210 FRWY BETWEEN SAN DIMAS AND FONTANA, NOTICED A VERY UNUSUAL VIBRATION ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK. THE LEFT MIRROR WAS ALSO VIBRATING. CAME TO THE END OF THE FREEWAY IN RIALTO, AS I SLOWED DOWN TO A STOPP LIGHT THE WHOLE TRUCK WAS SQUIRMING FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I FOUND THAT THE TREAD HAD BUBBLED UP FOR APPROX. A QUARTER OF THE TIRE, I PUT MY SPARE ON AND EXAMINED THE TIRE. THERE IS STEEL POPPING OUT OF THE INSIDE PART OF THE TREAD, IT'S OBVIOUS THE TREAD IS SEPERATING AND COMING APART. WHAT IS BRIDGESTONE GOING TO DO ABOUT THESE TIRES? I HAVE TWO FRIENDS WITH THE SAME TIRES THAT HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO THEM, BOTH UNFORTUNATELY SUFFERED BLOWOUTS AND MAJOR BODY DAMAGE.

How to read this

Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.

FAQ

What goes wrong with Bridgestone Dueler AT tires?
Across 78 written complaints, the most common description is blowout or sudden deflation, in 28% of reports; about 1.4× as often as across all tire complaints. A single report can describe more than one problem.
Is the Bridgestone Dueler AT recalled?
Complaints are not recalls. A complaint is a voluntary, unverified owner report; a recall is an official campaign requiring a free remedy. Check the current recall status by DOT date code at the NHTSA recall lookup; that is the only authoritative answer for your specific tire.
At what mileage do Bridgestone Dueler AT tires fail?
Of the owners who stated an odometer reading, the middle report is at 13,140 miles, with 8 in 10 between 3,000 and 86,000 miles. These are failures, not typical tire life; nobody files a complaint about a tire that wore out normally.
Have Bridgestone Dueler AT failures caused crashes?
Owners reported 9 crashes and 3 injuries when filing. NHTSA publishes these as reported and does not verify them.
