BCT hi-run tire failures: what 34 owner reports say
Every complaint filed with NHTSA against the BCT Hi-run, read and classified: which failures owners actually describe, how that mix compares with all tire complaints on file, and at what mileage the tire let go.
The evidence base
Crash, injury and death figures are the counts owners themselves reported to NHTSA when filing.
What owners described
Blowout or sudden deflation appears in 59% of these reports; about 2.9× as often as across all tire complaints. Percentages are shares of the 34 reports filed against the BCT Hi-run across every vehicle it was fitted to that include a written account; a single report can describe more than one problem, so they do not total 100%.
| Reported problem | This subject | All tire complaints | Relative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blowout or sudden deflation | 59% | 20% | 2.9× |
| Sidewall failure | 32% | 15% | 2.2× |
| Tread or belt separation | 26% | 13% | 2.0× |
| Pressure-monitoring (TPMS) fault | 12% | 2% | 4.9× |
| Bubble or bulge in the tire | 9% | 6% | 1.5× |
| Cracking or dry rot | 6% | 9% | 0.6× |
Mileage at failure
22 of these reports state an odometer reading. The middle report is at 10,000 miles, with 8 in 10 falling between 2,000 and 38,000 miles.

SIX (6) BCT RADIAL A/P TIRES WERE INSTALLED ON 97 FLEETWOOD SOUTHWIND MOTORHOME (MODEL 32VS) ON 3/19/11 AT APPROX. 33000 MILES. ONE TIRE FAILED WITH TREAD SEPARATION WHILE DRIVING ON RT. 90,10 MILES WEST OF ROCHESTER, NY, ON 7/2/13. TREAD SEPARATION CAUSED WIRING DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT REAR WHEELWELL AREA. WIRING WAS REPAIRED, TIRE WAS REPLACED AND A TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED. SECOND TIRE FAILED (SIDEWALL RUPTURE) ON THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WHILE EXITING RT. 180 IN WILLIAMSPORT, PA ON 8/19/13. VEHICLE WAS EXITING TO INVESTIGATE A SEVERE FRONT END VIBRATION JUST PROIR TO THE FAILURE. TIRES WERE MONITORED FOR PRESSURE AND TEMP. AND SHOWED NO LOW PRESSURE OR HIGH TEMP. SIGNS. ALL BCT TIRES WERE REPLACED IN WILLIAMSPORT, PA ON 8/19/13, AT 38000 MILES.
PURCHASED 2 BCT HI RUN TIRES ST235/80 R16 LOAD RANGE E ON 8/19/2012. MAJOR BLOW OUT ON 5TH WHEEL TRAILER OCCURRED ON FIRST TIRE ON 4/29/2013 WHEN DRIVING I-10. CAUSED APPROXIMATELY 400.00 DAMAGE TO 5TH WHEEL FENDER SKIRT. SECOND TIRE MAJOR BLOW OUT ON 5TH WHEEL ON INTERSTATE 10 ON 8/19/2013. BOTH INCIDENTS WERE STRICTLY TIRE RELATED (TREAD SEPARATION). SECOND BLOW OUT CAUSED APPROXIMATELY 1,500.00 + DAMAGE TO FENDER AND FENDER SKIRT. MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO COMPENSATE. THEY CLAIM BOTH TIRES WERE IMPACT SEPARATION. IMPOSSIBLE....TRUCK PULLING 5TH WHEEL HAD NO TIRE OR VEHICLE DAMAGE. HAD TO PURCHASE 2 NEW TIRES TO BE ABLE TO GET HOME ON BOTH OCCASIONS. TIRES HAD APPROXIMATELY 9/32 TIRE TREAD DEPTH WHEN THEY BLEW. (CHECKED BY TIRE DEALER.)
ONE OF OUR VANS' BCT JB42 FRONT TIRE BLEW UP LEAVING FROM A PARKED AREA WITHOUT GOING OVER ANY SHARP OBJECTS OR CURVES. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS HURT BUT IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A HUGE ACCIDENT ON THE ROAD. I CHECKED FOR RECALL ON THIS TIRE BUT IT WAS NOT... I WILL NOW HAVE TO REPLACE 12 OF THESE TIRES ON MY OTHER VEHICLES BECAUSE I CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE CHANCES WITH THESE TIRES ALTHOUGH THEY ARE IN DECENT CONDITIONS... I THINK SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHECK INTO THIS TIRE MODEL FOR FUTURE SAFETY.
TOWING A FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER.11,400 LBS GVW. APPROX SPEED WAS 55-60 MPH. TIRES AT RECOMMENDED PRESSURE. 80PSI. TIRES ON TRAILER WERE ST225/75/15. FOUR TIRE FAILURES WITHIN 100 MILES. 3 BLOWOUTS AND 1 WITH BUBBLED SIDEWALL. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE TRAILER. THE TIRES WERE BCT BRAND. INSTALLED MARCH OF 2013. APPROX. 2000 MILES ON TIRES.
How to read this
Complaints are voluntarily submitted to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation and are not verified by NHTSA. They are owner-reported problems, not proven defects, and volume tracks how many of a tire were sold as much as how often it failed. What is comparable is the mix: which problems owners describe here versus across every tire complaint on file. That comparison, the mileage distribution and the mode rankings on this page are our analysis of the public record.
